re: families who dont get the flu shot

Nope. We didn't get one. LO stays at home with my all day. Since the flu "outbreak" we just stay at home more. We limit our time at restaurants and walmart and stuff.

I wasn't going to, but now that they're talking epidemic in my area I've changed my mind. I normally get it every year because of my risk factors, but this year I wasn't getting it because I wasn't really in a position to be exposed to it. Now that we live closer to town, I'm out all the time so I'm getting mine tomorrow.

This is the first year DD and I haven't got one. We're a military family. I used to be active and had no choice and DD had to have one to go to the CDC. But now we both stay home and we went without. Even going to the hospital and whatnot, we still haven't gotten sick. DH still had to get his and he's the only one that has gotten sick this season.

This is how the flu mainly kills people. For an average healthy person the flu isn't a big deal, but as for my daughter that has asthmatic issues it could kill her (hints why we get the flu shot to possibly reduce the symptoms if she does get it)

Here is a link http://richfield.patch.com/articles/five-flu-related-deaths-in-mn-where-to-get-shots

of a girl who just died from the flu and it is confirmed that she did indeed have a flu shot for the right strain of flu that she had

People keep saying that they aren't even using the active strain in this year's vaccine. Is there anything concrete about that? Everything I've read and heard says differently, that they're vaccinating in my area against the active strains and that the vaccine may not prevent it 100% in some people, but it will help you fight it off better if you do get sick.

It MAY help you or may not. Its a risk, if you have any underlying condition (i.e. diabetes, asthma, lupus, etc) the flu has a highly likely chance of killing you just because your immune system and body aren't in "healthy" c ondition.

The CNN article I read says the flu everyone is getting is "matching up well" with the strain in the vaccination

I was going to get one, and my son wasn't. But the area I live in has a LOT of flu cases, and it's killing people. I decided this year the benefits of getting the shot outweigh the risks. I know it doesn't protect against all strains, but a little protection is better than none.

I have ITP and Chronic Granulocytosis. I know I need to get one, I was just hoping to skate by this year since I hadn't really been going anywhere. Now that we live downtown, I'm out and about daily so I'm getting it done tomorrow. I remember getting H1N1 with my second put me in the hospital. A few months later I got the seasonal strain and was miserable until two months after I delivered.

If my children had health issues then I might re-think it but they are pretty healthy and usually fight things off quick. Remember it's not the flu that kills but complications that can arise after having or during a bout with the flu. We actually all got the flu this season (the week before Christmas) and we all fought it off within 10 days. The first 4 days with the fever were the worst, then it was mainly a cough that stuck around. My daughter picked it up at school I figure since she was the first to get it.
