"Respectable women don't get raped." *possible trigger*
posted 10th Jan
Not sure if the news has been world wide with this story but it's been big news in the UK. Last month a woman in her early 20's had been out in the evening at the cinema to see Life of Pi with a male friend in Delhi, India. Once the film was finished they boarded a bus home where they were attacked by 6 men and beaten, the woman was repeatedly brutally gang raped by the men and assualted sexually with a large rusting pole which tore apart her internal organs. They were dumped from the bus naked with the woman left to die. She was found and flown out the country to recieve life saving treatment however days passed and she died from her injuries in hospital. The Poloce tried to ignore the incident however large protests happened, international media coverage and the 6 men were arrested.
The lawyer defending the men has now came out to blame the woman and also to say the male friend is solely responsible for not saving her. He has made the statement that he has never known of a respectable woman to be raped, even the most dangerous man would not rape a respectable woman and thay the sole responsibilty for the incident lays with the male friend because he did not find hard enough to save her. Article here.

Earlier in the week a popular "Guru" had also caused controversy when he stated that the woman was as to blame for the incident as her rapists because she did not bow down to them. He believes she should not have fought and had she taken their hands, knelt before them and spoke to them as her religious brothers she would have been spared.
We have also recently seen the High School Gang rape in Ohio of a teenage girl covered up by authority and the opinion on social media of her peers that it was her fault. Statements include that had she not wanted it she wouldn't have went out that night, the idea that she must have been easy, where were her parents for a girl to be at a party anyway, etc, etc. There is also the common idea that if you are not in a position to say no and you don't physically fight you must have wanted it.
So why has it been possible for this victim blaming to exist for so long when it comes to rape and do you think it is getting worse or better? I look at those comments and I think why is not the most basic of common sense to say no respectable man would rape? Why do people automatically ask where were the parents of this young girl for her to be out instead of where were the parents of these young boys that they were out drinking taking drugs and brutally gang raping a young girl? Why do people automatically judge a woman and assume she must be easy or asking for it, where is the judgement for the man that in order for him to rape he must be the scum of the earth and mentally deranged? Why do we teach how not to get raped but it is very uncommon to teach not to rape and what consent really means?
I also feel in a way it is becoming worse. I have been aware for years of lawyers and people trying to justify the idea that it was consensual but I am seeing a growing trend that people acknowledge there was a rape but feel it was ok anyway because she fought to hard or she didn't fight at all, that she was dressed inappropriately, that men just can't control themselves so it makes it ok..... I feel we are going backwards.
What do you think?

Wow thats terrible... Its almostlike rape is turing to be a normal thing now a days,. Like no one ever takes it seriously.... But maybe its due to the fact that 40% of rapes are lied about and the ones that need justice dont get it, so sad for that woman. Why would spmeone rape you with a rusty metal pole. Like wtf did she live?

How absolutely hideous. One of the men involved in the attack was the bus driver. They didn't have a prayer the moment they got on that bus.

What a bunch of smurfing bullsmurf.

Such bullsmurf. No one deserves to be raped. And who's to determine who's "respectable?" Those that have the same ideas and thoughts as you are respectable and those that differ do not? Thats a dangerous game to play. Rape is rape and rape is wrong.

She didn't survive.
How dare they place the blame on her OR her friend!! Smurfing sick, I hope they're hanged for it

It's a cultural issue, just like the father who killed his daughter b/c she wouldn't wear a scarf or parents who kill their children for dating without approval b/c it's disrespectful to the family. The world is disturbing and pretty smurfed up, unfortunately these things will continue to happen no matter what is said or done about it. It's a shame

How do you mean that 40% of rapes are lied about? Do you mean Police lie and cover it up and don't want to deal with it or 40% are false accusations? Because only 2% of reported rape is a false accusation not anywhere near 40%

I read an article about the one in India online and I am shocked to learn about the one here in Ohio because I haven't heard anything about it. I don't get where people get off saying that it't a woman's fault that she was raped. And usually it's a man saying. By saying it's her fault she was raped they are basically saying that men have no self control and can't tell right from wrong.
And how was that poor boy in India supposed to fight off six other men and defend that woman? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say he isn't Superman or even Batman. "It is her fault she was raped" is the WORST excuse I have ever heard.

I can say personally I have sadly gone thru a few sexual assaults and my son is the result of such an accident....I can assure you that I never wanted what happened and nothing about my status or religion would have helped me as for my son I think it was meant to be even if it came from something bad...and I can say that in a previous inncident while the act was not ok I was in place I didnt need to be and certainly not helping matters there are many types of situations but niether story posted by op should have been shrugged off like that it was wrong and the death of a girl is never something she asked for....
