How do you know if sleep training....

How do you know if 'sleep training' is hurting your child rather than helping??
I have been so hesitant about this. My dd is 15 months old and still nurses all night. We have co-slept until now. Two nights ago I put her in her own room (which she naps in). The first night she cried a little bit- IF i was there. If i was gone she sniffle and falls asleep! So last night I left the room and she didnt cry at all (well maybe for a minute but more like whining) and i heard some sniffles and yawns and she fell asleep. Each morning she wakes up so happy to see me and plays normally all day.
So does anyone know the SIGNS that a person should not be doing this?
