re: Fiscal cliff, an Australian view

*Sigh*

Apparently Australians care more about our imminent demise than Americans do.

I don't think they care more...I think denial is far less scary than looking at the numbers. Many people turn to denial or ignoring an issue if they have no idea what to do to resolve it. When you are standing by watching, you have no reason to be in denial. It is common on every level of human problems.

If i am understanding you correctly, you think being scared and overwhelmed is casuing denial in our country.
If that is the case, i disagree.
IMO, the people that showed up to vote didnt have complete info, didnt care to put effort forth to get complete info AND voted for immediate security (i.e. more free stuff) as opposed to thinking about the bigger picture.
This issue of fiscal irresponsibility is being ignored as the message isnt getting out there and is rather boring to many (finance). Who wants to talk about budgets? Our president wont even talk about budgets.

Have you ever known someone IRL that filed for bankruptcy. I have. What I saw was a TON of denial. I get it - people aren't often well informed, but people who overspend & can't pay bills ALSO do not even both many times to open their mail. Being willfully uniformed doesn't mean it's not denial.

Yes. I know lots of people who filed BK. yes, denial and irresponsibility were involved.
Perhaps it's semantics. I wouldn't describe those who know our problem is getting worse yet vote for furthering the problem as people in denial.
