carseat question

posted 9th Jan
I need opinions on something... we currently have a Graco MyRide 65 for my 3 year old. It starts at 5 lbs rear facing, then forward faces from 40 to 65 lbs. I was planning on just buying a second in a different print for Maya when she gets here. While walking around Target, DH noticed the harness booster seats that are about $60 and they start at 20 lbs. If we buy another MyRide, it's $159.99. He suggested we just buy our 3 year old the harness booster and recycle the MyRide for the new baby. What are your thoughts on this? DD1 weighs about 27-28 lbs if that makes a difference. TIA!

I wouldn't use a booster seat yet. My 50lb 4-yr-old is still in a 5 pt harness.

It is a 5 point harness. This is similar to what he saw:

I would go with one that actually makes a good booster like the Graco Nautilus.

Facepalm. I just did the same thing you did lol. I was thinking it was more like a booster seat. I think my daughter is in one already

I would wait for her to be at least four to go in one of those.

we went with a 5 pt booster when they boys out grew thier old convertble seats. they are just as safe as the ff car seats. i say go for it. save some money.

Yeah, when DH told me to look at the boosters I thought he was crazy. The "booster" that we're thinking of though is apparently called a seatbelt positioner in target lol. xD

It depends. If your 3 year old is still rear facing, I'd go with the MyRide. For a forward facing child, you are paying more for a seat that you are not going to use a mode on (rear facing). There really isn't a difference in safety between a FF convertible vs a harnessed booster (or combination seat) used with the harness.

However, the seat you posted will only hold up to 40lbs, which is all many of the combo seats that are under $100 will hold. You will want one that holds 65lbs or more in the harness because you want your little girl harnessed as long as possible. I usually recommend, the Graco Nautilus, but it is usually around $150. There is a new seat out, exclusive to Walmart called the Harmony Defender 360. It is comparable to the Nautilus, it harnesses to 65lbs with tall top slots, becomes a high back and then no back booster to 100lbs. It's the only combo seat that will last awhile that is under $100.
