17-OHP Shots

posted 9th Jan
So because my son was born 5 weeks premature. My doctor has recommended that I start these shots. According to my doctor these shots could possibly reduce my chances of having a preterm baby by a 1/3. But according to the research that I have done its not a guarantee that they will even work. And here's the big kicker of it all. Medicaid will not cover this drug nor does the compounding pharmacies accept my Tricare. So in order to even get 1 months supply -- its a weekly shot -- that might not even work is going to be $148.
So you see I have quite a dilemma. I know that I want my son to have every opportunity to be born at 40 weeks. But is it worth to put a synthetic drug into my system that may not even work that costs more than my cable bill?

I'd find a compound pharmacy that will accept tricare and/or get the meds.

If it will maybe cut down on PTL then to me the answer is easy.

I had a son born 5 weeks early, as well, and went into preterm labor with my youngest daughter(my third child). Here, $100 is for a 10 week supply, and $50 for a 5 week supply(which is what my doc prescribed for me). You said Tricare, so I'm thinking you're somewhere near a military base. I went for it because if it keeps my peace of mind and there's a chance this little monkey stays in longer, I'll go for it. Just, if you DO go for it, ask what oil they compound it with, because there have been issues in women who have had it compounded with castor oil(mine was done with sesame oil).

I had the shots with my DD. I had to fight to get them. When I was pregnant the FDA approved them for the use of PTL so my insurance gave in and paid for them. Still had her at 33 weeks though.

The problem with the one that IS FDA-approved is that ORDERING it is such a runaround, and most will not even CONSIDER ordering it because it doesn't come from their wholesaler. However, a compounding pharmacy can still fill the prescriptions( mine was written for the Makena, but my doc signed on the "substitutions allowed" line and I was able to still get it filled). BUT, that is not covered by insurance...ANY insurance.

Quoting PurpleBama582:" I had a son born 5 weeks early, as well, and went into preterm labor with my youngest daughter(my third ... [snip!] ... it with, because there have been issues in women who have had it compounded with castor oil(mine was done with sesame oil). "
The Tricare is through my soon to be ex husband ( not my baby's father) (trying to get a divorce, been separated for over 3 years). My ID has been expired for almost 2 years. And the only way to use the on post pharmacy is to have a valid ID. So I cant do that.

That makes sense. Was yours written for 10mL or just 5? That makes a difference in the price, too, and how often it has to be refilled.

Its a months supply. So to be refilled every month. 4 doses. Its written for 250 mg.

That's odd...most will either do 5 doses or 10, not 4. The 250mg is per mL.

So I gave in and got the shots. I took my first dose this morning. I was just wondering if any one who had taken the shots. What were the side effects you experienced?
