Toddler speech.

When BD and I had DD to her 18 month appointment, the nurse mentioned she should be speaking 2-3 word sentences at that time. Of course, DD wasn't. So when we take her back at age 3, it will be re-evaluated and we will go from there if she's gonna need to have speech therapy.
She babbles like she's carrying on a grand conversation and knows what she's saying. There are the random few words that come out.
The words she knows are:
Mama, dada, baba, papa, mimi, cup, hat, kitty, puppy, doggy, cat, guy, boo, hi, bye/buh-bye, mom, mommy, bumpa (its what she calls her grandpa), bampy (her grampy), nanny, no, yes, night, shoe, mine, cookie, car..
She knows how to say all of her father's mother's pets names... Stewie, Molly, Hudson and Jenny. She knows how to say 2 of her 4 aunts names.
The only sentences I've heard her say:
- see ya later
- I see you
- what's that?
What age were your kids when they started talking and actually making decent sense? DD is turning 22 months on the 11th.

DD's vocabulary exploded about 24mos. Lin seems to be okay, IMO.

3 word sentences at 18 months? Yeah, no. Not many kids can do that.
Her speech seems okay now. Wait until she's 3 but I think by then she'll be right on track.

It's progressively gotten better as time has gone on obviously but around 2 was when we saw a lot more sentences coming out. Now it's very few and far between that we don't understand her. I think she does that on purpose though.
I think Lin sounds pretty normal. Especially since you don't have her in daycare or anything like that (they tend to talk a little earlier/more when they are around other kids all the time from what I've learned).

When I spoke to ECI when DS was 2.5 I gave the lady the list of words DS was saying, but he wasn't speaking in 2-3 word sentences. She told me that is the only reason why I should be concerned, but DS began speaking in 2-3 word sentences a week later.
Your daughter sounds fine to me. My son no longer babbles, but his words jumble together at times and he will be 3 this month.

I think my son was putting small sentences together at age 2. My daughter is developmentally delayed & non-verbal, she's 2yrs 4mos. now & only says about 8 words (most not clearly). She has been in Physical Therapy since 12mos. old & Speech Therapy since 22mos. old. She wasn't saying anything until we started therapy so she is showing improvement.

My daughter will be 2 next month and she didn't talk a whole lot at 18 months either but every month she gets new words. She can carry on a conversation pretty well now and will say up to 5 word sentences but she will say anything after us. Like if I say "Do you want eggs for breakfast" she'll say "Yeah, eggs for breakfast". She seems to talk a lot now but she still babbles her baby talk in full conversations too. She knows what she is saying lol. But it did help that I made her say everything and talk a lot. Every time she wanted something I'd ask her to say or ask for it etc. Or for example I'd say "We're almost done....can you say almost (or almost done)" that sort of thing. It helped for us at least. She knows some colors and can count to 3 so far too...it was just about repetition.

DS is 18 month old, and he speaks in small sentences, and can say alot of single words. I think it was 15-16 months where he really started talking though.

Thanks ladies.
We do the repitition thing.. she has learned quite a few things that way. Can count to 3. Then throw in 5 or 7 randomly lol.
Liz - I do get her to talk when she wants something, it's how she's got a couple words down pat. We're working on her manners too, she just got "pees" down and thank you and welcome come out "elcome" lol.

That's so cute! I love how their words come out when they're first learning. See your daughter seems just fine :-) I know kids that are older and talked much less than that...much less...and they were just fine as well. We're now working on excuse me since instead she says Move! Thank you. Lol....she's rude and polite at the same time. Haha
