Getting a child's eyes checked

posted 9th Jan
How do they check a young child's eyes?
Like, if they don't know the letters or whatever?
My son is 3 1/2 and I'm worried about his eye sight. He's constantly trying to be up on the tv because he says he can't see from the couch. Constantly running into things.
He came about an inch from the counter the other day before he stopped and changed directions...and he was actually paying attention because I was watching him.

Pictures. They can also look in their eyes. It's hard to get a good astigmatism assessment because they have to stay super still. But they can get a pretty accurate vision assessment based on looking in their eyes. Idk if it's how Their yes react when they put up a certain script or what. But they can. Dd got glasses at age 4.

They look into their eyes, have them follow a light or toy or what not. Cylus is due for his check up again in Dec and I am nervous!

my children's doctor had this little device that shoots a beam into the eye and can tell if the child needs to see an optimologist. which my oldest daughter did and she looks adorable in glasses

Ah ok, makes sense. Thank you!

I'm just afraid he's going to have eye sight like me...and that's not good at all! Figured I better get him checked out before he starts getting worse.

He's got a learning delay, so he doesn't know all of that yet. He knows some, but not a lot.
I have an eye doctor already. It's one I take my daughter to.

That sucks that they tried to rush LO....glad you found a good one though!

cylus doesn't talk really at all so yea they just looked in his eyes and said he could use a slight prescription but nothing that they were really worried about and it wouldn't be worth the time to get him glasses because of how minor it was.

Aw that's good!!! That's how my daughter is...she's got great vision!
I'm not sure my son would be able to do it though...he can't really identify a lot of things just yet, we're still working on it.

I'm like you, can't see anything without the glasses. lol It sucks.

That's what I did. I took dd at age 2 for the first time a s a precaution because I had a lazy eye as a child and had surgery and stuff. So I wanted to catch it early if she had the same issue. She was fine then. Then at age 4 she failed her eye test at school so I took her and she got glasses to see things far away. I'll have to probably take her soon to check her script. She really only needs them at group times at school or when the teacher writes on the board. She can do desk work without them. I leave them at school for her but I honestly don't think she wears them. She tells me she doesn't. But idk.

try to find a pedi eye doc. or one that others have taking their small kids to. I took my son to a eye masters in the mall that fool tried to tell me my son need bifocals velcroed to his head 24-7 and that hes so blind he should of had glasses since birth.... even tho I TOLD him he didn't know all the stuff he was showing him. went to a pedi eye doc and he showed him shapes and colors and little things like horses ect and just looked said he didn't need him to tell him what he could n couldn't see and he did so well he only needs glasses for reading.

that might be why he is a bit delayed tho coz he cant see things to identify them preoperly. so it may help alot if he get glasses.

Oh we have a good one!
I take my daughter to him. He's a family eye doctor but he specializes in pedi. He's great.

And that's crazy!

I agree. Do a local family optometrist or a specific pedi one. I use a local family practice and they are way better with children.
