possible pre term labor?

posted 9th Jan
i went in to l&d sunday because i was having regular contration for two hours.they weren't painful but a little uncomfortable so i went in and got monitored.they did a swab test to check for a cretin protein to see if i would go into labor within the next two weeks,it came back positive   i went to my obgyn yesterday and said everything looked fine,i had a internal ultrasound of my cervix and it was still long and closed and wasn't concerned about anything happening.i'm still afraid he will come early. If i do go into labor early what can be done to stop it?is there anything i can do at home to help stop the contractions when they start up?

Stay hydrated. TONS of water.

Be aware of your Braxton Hicks contractions. If you have more than 5 in one hour, go in. Even if they don't hurt.

Also, relax. Don't stress too much. Just be aware of your body and take it easy!

Did you have sex 24 hours before the test? Also I been having preterm labor as well, it's a good thing that you are still long and closed. I'm 50% effaced... I have to make it until at least 35 weeks.

The Dr didn't tell you to be on bed rest? Both my boys were premature. They had me on hospital bed rest and on magnesium sulfate and trebudiline shots and some sort of pills to keep the labor at bay.

Thanks! I'm not so much scared, just tired of being in pain all the time. Since last week, it's been pretty painful.... I know I can get to 35 though...I just rest a lot.

The Ffn test (the protein test you were talking about) is only accurate .. about 95% accurate to be exact.. if you get a negative. The positive is only 50% accurate. That doesn't make it any less scary, but if your cervix is closed and it's still long, chances of you going into labor are only slightly higher than a regular person.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't take it easy, drink fluids, and watch for contractions obviously. The dr's don't like us PTL girls to get more than 4 to 6 contractions per hour. Since you're still so early, you might want to ask the dr about progesterone shots if he hasn't already talked about starting them. That will help keep everything calm in there and has the least amount of side effects. It can help a lot.

As far as contractions, if you still have contraction episodes, there are several drugs they can give you at home to help treat them so you don't have to keep going into the hospital all of the time. I personally like indocin until 32 weeks (some dr's stop it at 28 weeks). It's in the motrin family, and they'll have to monitor your fluid levels, but IMO, it works the best and doesn't make you feel icky like the other ones do (terb, procardia, nifedifine) Procardia is the other option that they'll prescribe for at home use. It's a bp medicine. It's never worked all that great for me.

Like other people have said, drink a bunch of water and lay down when you're getting a bunch of contractions. Count how many you have per hour and let the dr know if you go over 4 to 6 per hour.

Good luck!
