Drive or fly?

posted 9th Jan
So, I am due March the 9th and would like to go interstate from April the 11th-18th to stay at my Mums and let her see her grandkids. Its a 16 hour drive, two hour flight. The problem with flying is my double pram is too big for the plane and we have to take alot of baggage for us AND two kids. Also I only know one person who has two carseats so we wouldnt be able to get around. Flying would cost less though and although I have done the drive twice with DS I worry how the baby will cope, and myself for that matter. Opinions?

Fly. Maybe rent a car when you get there? Or have DH drive the car and you fly.

I wouldn't make a 16hr drive that far along. No thanks.

We moved from AZ to MT when my twins were 5 1/2 weeks old. It was HELL! They aren't on a regular schedule at that point and getting them used to the first leg of the car ride was terrible. It took us 5 hrs to make a 2 1/2 hr trip to pick up my parents in the next city to help us drive the two vehicles.

You would be suprised how little you actually need in the terms of baggage for a trip. Especially since one is an infant. Pack 2 suit cases, a stroller, 2 carseats and a moby wrap of sorts. Then give the older child a backpack to put toys and books in. Really that is plenty and probably more than you will need. Your mother has a washing machine. It is 7 days. Pack about 4-5 days worth of clothes and you will be fine.

I'd fly. I can't imagine 16 hours in a car w/ a newborn.

They dont need to be so old to fly? (Never flown, just asking)

Definitely fly! Take advantage of having a lap infant, to me it is a great luxury!

I did the trip with DS when he was 8 weeks young, DH drove and we only were in the car at night when DS would only wake up for bottles. DH would sleep during the day in a hotel room while I looked after DS so the trip happened over two days. Apart from the money and length of the trip its much more convenient. DH is too young to hire a car.

It's really up to you as there are pros & cons to each. I'd fly, but that is me. You don't need all that much luggage. We went out of state with my 2 lots of times. I buy dipes when I arrive & don't pack too many. I nurse, so no bottles. Infant clothing is tiny so ti take up very little space. They make straps you can buy that strap your carseat to your luggage, so you take your own seats with you. Not only that, your child can ride IN the seat while rolling through the airport. http://www.amazon.com/Go-Go-Babyz-Travelmate-Luggage-Orange/dp/B0068IGSHM
We normally travel to see family, so I also just plan to do wash while I am there to reduce packing as well instead of packing for enough clean clothing for every day we visit. If you plan smart, flying with kids does NOT have to be hard - assuming you don't get bumped (we did & spent 10 hrs in the airport last time waiting to get on "the next flight" & THEN had to do an overnight & fly out in the morning). The kids were great about it though, surprisingly & we got comped for it, so it's all good in the end, but tough at the time.
