re: Fluoride supplements: Yes or No?

posted 8th Jan
DS uses fluoride drops and he's 3, and has been taking them since he was about 9 mos. old, I want to say. The Dr. recommended them bc we have no fluoride in our city water..
I slacked off for like a year bc.. Well, I just got careless and didn't think anything of it, but continued to brush his teeth. He soon developed cavities and I assumed it was bc of the no fluoride.. Anyways, he refuses to use fluoride toothpaste bc he says it burns, so we still do the drops.

Quoting Kristen Parris:" I cant believe they suggested that for a 9 month old..... at that age I would definitely say no."

Yeah I couldn't either. She told me that I needed to start giving him water in a sippy, and putting the fluoride supplements in those. I told her that he was breastfed, and we didn't want to do sippy cups yet, and she insisted and wrote the prescription anyway. I never went to pick it up.
Like I said, she and I differ on a lot of things. We're working on switching ped's right now. I'm really hoping this new one works out, because she was our 2nd pedi already.

no def not.

a teensy tiny bit of toothpaste with flouride while brushing teeth is PLENTY. Even then, only use the TINIEST amount, like to where you can barely see any toothpaste on the toothbrush, especially when they are too young to learn to spit it out.

taking a flouride tablet to help strengthen teeth is like taking an oral painkiller when you only need your toe to be numb. Overkill and potentially hazardous.

Okay, that's what I was thinking also. I just read a couple articles quoting the CDC. Even they say that fluoride retention is topical, not systemic.

Quoting MommyToWesley:" So the general consensus is that my 9 month old doesn't need fluoride supplements? And definitely not at his age?"

My twins are 9 months old and I don't give them any fluoride and their tooth paste is fluoride free. I swithch to juiors toothpaste with fluoride when they are about 2.
