is it true, vaccines?

posted 8th Jan
Is it true that if a child has a mild reaction to a vaccination
That if they receive it again the reaction will be worse?
DD has never had a 'bad' reaction with vaccines.
just the normal
Fever
Sorness
Grumpy
Sleepy
Loss of appetite

But she did get a knot in her leg after her 6 month shots that was there for a while.. Is that a 'reaction'? I'm not sure which vaccine caused it though because she had like 4

Those aren't reactions. Those are typical side effects. But yes, reactions can get worse with each exposure.

My DD had a knot on her leg that was hot after her 2 month shots. A cool wash cloth helped. She's 2 1/2 now and never had any other reaction with any of her other shots.

I was told with all of DS's shots he may have knots at the injection site, so I think that's perfectly normal.

Also, I've heard the knots can be from how the nurse applied the shot. If they didn't rub it in enough or something.

No. My son had a crappy reaction to some of his first shots (not the ones given at the hospital but the ones he got after that). He had a fever, he was sore, he slept a lot, etc.... all typical things.

He has had plenty of vaccines since and hasn't had a reaction like that ever again.

Also, when I was about 12 I got a ton of shots before leaving the country and I had a very bad reaction to the Typhoid vaccine. I've gotten that one again and nothing happened.

To be clear, reactions such as rashes ect... can get worse with each exposure.

Knots do form from the injection. Nurses don't "rub" the injection site. However, as a mother I will massage the injection site after their shots. It does help with the pain. It is the same as when you get your flu shot. If you move your arm around in circles and or rub the area you got your shot, your arm isn't sore. Same concept for little people's legs. I do also take a little "boo boo buddy" cool pack with me. For some reason as the girls get older (they are 4) they get more dramatic with the shots. It is annoying. lol I just put the cool pack on the spot where they are going to get their shot for a bit, then as soon as the band aid goes on, I rub for a bit and back on goes the boo boo buddy.

Why would they rub it? That is pretty dangerous.

Hmm, I had to research it after all the replies! You all are right, the site shouldn't be rubbed. I wonder if I heard her wrong or am just remembering incorrectly. She had the knot after her 2 month appointment and I asked them about it at her 4 month. She's 2 1/2 now, so it was quite awhile ago!

That's what I was thinking.
My DD's pedi actually told me to rub the injection site right after vaccines to prevent knots and distribute the injection in the muscle.

It works. It helps aleviate the soreness after the fact. You obviously don't want to do it with dirty hands without the bandaid on (little ones are hypersensitive to germs), but it most certainly is not dangerous. I didn't know this little trick until my girls were getting their second series of shots. Let me tell you, it was day and night difference in how they rebounded from them.
