the current population in USA is actually facing a decline. to maintain the population, each couple should have 2.1 children.....the current average per couple in America right . now is actually around 1.6. people are having less children now. it seems like people are having a lot to us because we're on a baby website...but nationally we're headed for decline. people like me with four is a rare sight. and funny enough, people with three children is considered a large family! 100years ago it'd be considered a very small family

Very good point. The one-child family and childless couples are the fastest growing "families" in the developed world.

my husband only has one friend who has one kid. in my circle, I know tons of childless couple and couples who chose to only have one.those couples are just as baffling to me as I'm sure I am to them.

And there are plenty of nations that are actually stagnant or negative.

Word, dude.

I really like it when people assume I'm some sort of religious nutjob because I have 4 kids close in age.

we'll I've heard that's the only reason to have more than two, is because you're part of some cult. I mean geez, what other reason could there be?! what I hate is when I was pregnant with my younger two, I'd constantly be asked "are you done having kids now?" or . "was that baby even planned?" like it never dawned on them that I had four because I *shock * wanted four. and if I got pregnant again I would be tickled pink and very excited.

Because I'm apparently too young to have 4 kids, I often get asked if they're all full sisters.

I think my favorite is that my second inherited the Native American traits (darker skin, dark eyes, darker hair) and the other 3 are pale and blonde.   I'm sure people think she's not his.

lol my husband is blonde haired and blue eyed. I would joke with him (not a politically correct joke but we . all make tasteless jokes some times) while I was pregnant "love, when this baby comes out, I just want you to know that just because it's black doesn't mean it's not yours."

According to Duckie, DH and I should have at least two dozen to make up for 2 previous generations of small families.

I'm an only, Dh is an only (well, basically, his brother died at 6 months), my dad is an only, and both Dh's parents were onlies.

So if we replaced the 2nd child missing from each only child family, even just in our parents' and our generation, to maintain population, and then made up for the children they never existed to have, we'd have...

25*(corrected from miscalc of 29) children.

That doesn't surprise me. Kids are helluva expensive and with college and student loans slowing people down, I can see why people are choosing to have fewer or no children at all!

Oh wait, nvm. 25. I added an extra few in there somewhere.

But the principle still stands ;)

yup I get it. for me, I didn't want to go to college, didn't want a career, didn't want to travel or party in my twenties. I wanted to be a mommy. not having children wasn't an option for me. one way or another, I was gonna be a mommy. I've been happy ever since   babies don't cost too much...it's those Damn teenagers that cost a fortune. *shakes fist at teenage hooligans*
