It can be, but doesn't mean its happening. It's just your body clearing out beforehand.

I had "lose BM" a month and a half before giving birth up until I delivered. I think it's just your body's way of cleansing itself out before birth. I wouldn't say it's a sign or labor though.

If contractions start and don't stop with rest and hydration, then you know.

I should probably make a disclaimer for those that argue that they never had regular contractions. Everyone pregnancy is different. You may know, you may not know. Fortunately, I had a BM while in labor, so I didn't poop on the delivery table.
