Touchy subject but need advice

posted 8th Jan
I just had my little boy on January 4th and he was circumcised on Sunday. (circumcision is touchy with some people) His doctor said put vaseline on gauze for three days to help it stay clean and heal and change it every diaper change. It it still kind of red but not as sore looking and shiny like when he first got it. I was wondering if you guys find it weird that its not really healed enough in my opinion to stop the gauze and vaseline? I want to keep gauze on but also not too sure because my doctor told me to do it that way bu I have friends whos doctors say different and their boys turned out fine. And also what do you mommas do to wipe it so you dont hurt him because I have a squirmy guy when it comes to diaper changes even before his circ was done and Ive tried cleaning it but he gets so cranky with it and I have to nurse sometimes after to calm him. Hes just overall fussy when it comes to diaper changes. Sorry if its long and confusing.

On my boys I put triple antibiotic ointment on it. No gauze though. I cleaned it with non scented wipes at each diaper change and put ointment back on it. Never had a problem and it healed fine on both of them.

We kept vaseline on our boys for a long time, it helps it not to stick.

You should take away the gauze but continue the Vaseline until its healed my sons took about a week. Makes it much easier to clean. When he was really messes I gave him a quick bath avoiding his umbilical cord.

My doctors only told me to put vaseline on it. Follow your drs directions. The only time I was advised to wipe it was if poo got on it, which never happened to me. I just put a ton of vaseline on it. My first got the little ring that goes on the tip, my second got the plastibell witch covers the whole thing until it's healed then falls off.

I still use Vaseline and DS is almost 4 months old. I would gently wipe him around his penis but careful not to mess with it. Also, the gauze that they put on him (I think that's what it was called) fell off around 4 or 5 days. But follow whatever your doctor said.

My concern is it sticking to his diaper and having to pull it off and also vaseline not letting it dry to heal it the same time is my other fear. So I'm stuck and lost and dont want him to get infected which is rare but still nervous. I was told by a friend with the same doc that he said that as long as you dont put as much just keep a dab directly on the penis to prevent the sticking if it is still red and sore to the baby. And with wiping it off he scream bloody murder but its hard to tell if it hurts that bad or not because he does it with diaper changes before he got it done and with cord cleaning also. I use just his regular baby wipes to clean it off. I rinse it in sponge baths but maybe that would hurt less since the sponge we use is softer and more skin friendly with that area.

My doctor told me to do the gauze and Vaseline for a week after and then just Vaseline until the doctor said to stop at an appointment. So we did Vaseline until about 2 weeks but we stopped the gauze after a week.
And only wipe his penis if there is poop on it. The Vaseline will likely keep the pee from getting on it because it creates a barrier between the penis that the moisture can't penetrate. If there is poop, just dab it away if you can wipe gently if you must with unscented wipes.

If it is sticking to the diaper you need to keep the vaseline on it, it will still heal, all of my boys healed and I kept the vaseline on it for at least a week straight then periodically if the skin started to stick again.

I would stop messing with it and use enough vaseline so that it doesn't stick to his diaper. Your pediatrician seems to be giving odd advice that I've never come across on this forum, or personally. I don't want to advise you to go against his advice since I don't fully know whats going on.

i kept putting the Vaseline and gauze on it until I thought it was healed enough that his peepee wouldn't stick to his diaper. if it gets stuck, it can rip off the new skin that is forming. and don't worry about the Vaseline 'not letting it heal' thing. it will (:
