flu shot at 6 months

posted 8th Jan
at my daughters 6 month check up which is in 3 weeks the pedi wants to give her a flu shot on top of the others she gets. im on the fence about it, i feel damned if i do damned if i dont. i think either way something could go wrong. shes so young. they didnt do it when i was little. i have never had a flu shot. they say babies get it more but still. she isnt in daycare. but the doctor office already told us that they dont except non vaccinating patients. im on medcaid i cant change doctors but i feel forced. ugh advice please

You might be able to switch your Medicaid plan so you can find a different doctor. If she isn't in childcare I don't see ANY reason why she should have it. But it's up to you mama. Do what you think is best for your baby.

Both of my daughters had the flu shot at 6 months with no issues. But they do go to a daycare center. The flu vaccine is not required so I dont think they can dismiss you for not giving the flu shot. My doctor office will only dismiss you if you dont give Dtap, hep B, those kind of vaccines.

Here on Medicaid you HAVE to vaccinate your child. DD had hers at 6 months no issues however, I'm a little surprised they want to give it in Jan. My pedi said if it's given after November it doesn't really do anything since it wasn't given soon enough to do anything. Most likely your DD has already been exposed to the flu so the shot won't really do anything.

I only gave it to them because they go to a center if I was a stay at home mom I would not as been so worried about it.

You can pick up the flu virus anywhere. Not just day care. I think it's best to just go on and do it. Especially seeing so many kids with a positive flu test this year.

How many shots is she already getting? The more shots they get the more risky it is.

If its their first flu vaccine ever ( and under age 9) they need two doses. It helps build up their immunity. And flu vaccines are recommended throughout the flu season. No matter when you get it. It still works the same.

I know they get the 2 doses but like I said, my pedi said it's pointless to get one past November since flu season is already in full swing and you most likely will already be exposed when you get the shot so the shot won't do much good.
If she gets the first dose in 3 weeks, then has to wait 1 month before dose 2 her DD won't be fully protected from the flu until March and by then flu season is basically over.

so medicaid requires me to vaccinate...is the flu required in that? because if it wont work into flu season is over then i dont want it

Well hello there, Holland mama.

I didn't have to vaccinate my son...I go to North Ottawa and I refused the flu shot and post-poned a couple of them. My son is on Medicaid Priority Health.

Are you sure it's required in Michigan? Because my doctor gave me the choice.

P.S. I eventually DID give my son the flu shot once he was around other children.

I'm pretty sure. My case worker, the pedi she had at the time, and the paperwork I got said that she HAD to get all the vaccines, and had to get them according to the state schedule and the flu shot was on there. We were going to do it anyway but it came up because at the time she got her flu shot, DH's insurance through work hadn't kicked in yet and DD was having stomach issues at the time so the on call nurse said she wouldn't do the vaccines while DD was having stomach issues but when she saw that DD had medicaid she said never mind we couldn't delay them.

OP if you have the choice, I personally wouldn't do it yet because flu season will almost be over and she will just need another one in the fall since it won't work against next flu seasons strain.
