re: how do you discipline your kids??

posted 8th Jan
I dont spank. My kids in general are well behaved. But with that said, they are kids. Kids do things or dont listen for many reasons. lol

I do many different things in disciplining them, depending on what the issues is.
They dont keep their rooms clean, they have a 1 day warning to pick it up. No outside no friends no phone no tv no nothing, till its done. If 24 hours is up and its not done. All their listed privalleges are gone for a week straight.
I go in their room and box everything up in clear rubbermaide containers (big one) I duct tape them close and they sit in the corner of their room to be looked at but not touched. After a week I take one box out, if they can keep that one box tidy for a week they get another box out and so on....

Not listening behavior, is usally a time out at the table till however long I feel is good.
Talking back is the same but different, a time out and they right lines or a small essay on why their language or behavior was not acceptable.
Bad behavior at school or incomplete work etc......usually acompanies lines and loosing all fun as well, till it is done.

They get day to week long groundings in their rooms with no tv and what not, just reading and thats about it.
But it all depends on what was NOT done, what was done or said etc......It works well with us. The only real battle we have is the room cleaning its the only thing they dont keep up with. lol

The other things are dont accure very ofeten at all. lol

That is crap. We own a house and have tenants....we'd NEVER skimp on getting it all fixed properly for them. I mean, it is still OUR investment. We'd be idiots not to take care of it.

The only time I "yell" is if I'm doing something and they're in another room. Usually if I'm finishing up dinner and they're downstairs, I yell down for them to come up and sit.

I yelled at church the other day   We were all in the "fellowship hall" and having a dinner together and I look over and see my 2 year old about to pull the fire alarm. I was all like..

He stopped in his tracks. Thank goodness.

I think she is saying that spanking won't automatically make a kid turn out to be a good person.

No, not at all. I'm saying that spanking really has no relation to our future behaviors. I do contribute spanking to my anger issues. I can clearly remember feeling violated every time I was spanked from Kindergarten on and that I should suffer such violation made me angry. Countless psychiatrists have actually linked regular physical punishment with self-esteem and anger issues in children.

Really, I went to prison because I was an smurf. Spanking didn't prevent me from being an smurf. Spanking didn't do smurf to teach me an ounce of discipline. Being sent to prison? Now that taught me a whole smurfing lot. Having someone tell me when I can eat, take smurf and sleep was what I needed which is why I am now a firm believer that restriction of freedom and loss of privileges is a much more effective disciplinary tool than any form of physical punishment.

In the future if you continue to have these types of problems, please know that your local Health Department works to protect renters from this type of property owner. Be sure to document your complaints and if you do not get resolution, call your local health department.

They don't want to take care of it but they still want the $1100 a month from us. I figured that out early on so everytime something NEEDS fixed, I threaten to short change the rent. I know that's bad but it works. And sadly, I feel like I skimp on other things that really should be fixed because I hate doing it. Like the floor in our kitchen has holes in it and it's curled up with mold behind it from the dishwasher and I haven't said anything. It's too much of a fight. So I just lay a mat on it and wipe the area with a towel when I use the dishwasher.

Ya'll are nicer than me giving your kid extra chances to listen. I mean, my 2 year old gets some slack...but my 4 year old? If she doesn't clean her room when we ask her to (which is a daily routine, she knows the drill) She loses the toys she refuses to pick up. End. of. Story.

Momma don't play games in this house.

Hahahah! Was it some slowmo smurf?? That's what I feel like sometimes. DD tries to pull stuff off of the counter but it never fails that there is something on top of whatever she is trying to get. I have had that moment with my purse falling already today.
