Honestly, in that situation I would spank before you end up with a seriously injured pretty. He needs to know that hitting hurts.

Honestly, at 17 months, it's a stage. Just keep redirecting and tell him "no"... It will stop eventually. DD did the same thing. It lasted maybe 3-4 weeks.

and for time outs keep putting him back till he does his time all the way through even if it takes 2 hours to do it...then have him go and say sorry to all the pets for hitting them

Spanking hurts no matter how soft you do it. It does sting for a few seconds. I would rather spank than take a cat to the vet for a broken leg or a dog for a concussion. Almost a third of my animals I got because a child hurt them and the owners couldn't afford a vet. I've held several animals dying from a brain bleed after being hit on the head with hard toys.

Teach him to stop hitting BY hitting...hmm..great logic there

Hmmm... If spanking doesn't work, I wonder why I've never had a problem with DD hitting after the first time I spanked.

my biggest worry is the animal turning on the kid i have a aunt and uncle who got one of there dogs that way the dog is sweet but snapped one day and bit a kid in the face cause she kept always hitting him..my grandparents had a cat that my uncle would tease and one day the cat snapped and blocked one of my cousins kids who was not 2 in the kitchen in the corner and started attacking him

not even 2

Jesus that's what I was thinking. I don't agree with spanking in any case but to spank a kid with the sole intention of HURTING him is stupid. I can't hit my boss when he pisses me off or does something wrong, so why can I hit a child who is 1/6th my size??

Well I understand that. It's a stage. The kid will outgrow it. In the meantime, use extreme supervision, redirection, tell him no, and time out if she must. It's not rocket science.

I really don't blame the animal for that. DD has been bitten by the rats and mongoose because she squeezed too hard. She apologized to them on her own accord.

I wouldn't leave kids alone with a pet even if this wasn't happening. You never know what the pet is thinking.
