re: Cord Blood Drug Test

posted 8th Jan
Our version of CPS over here scares the living daylights out of us. They come and visit all new single parents (in their eyes she is still counted as a single parent   ). Also when she didnt know she was pregnant till she was 10 or so weeks pregnant.

Fascinating.
I've only had C-Sections so I definitely never knew what was going on after they pulled mine out. I always assumed they figured out baby's blood type and all that from the heel stick from newborn screening.

I'm still curious to know how far back cord blood can go. I was told that it can detect exposure all the way back to when the cord was formed. Wouldn't it make more sense for the cord blood to only show metabolites from recent drug use?

They have something like that here. A nurse from Healthy Start will conduct a home visit shortly after leaving the hospital if you are eligible to participate (receive any sort of welfare usually.) They usually work right out of the CPS office in a separate section and report directly to an investigator if they see anything wrong.

It scares us. Like we wont be good enough parents and they will find something wrong and take him off us.

yes, people and even nurses had been rude due to the sub. fact... Have been on Subs for over 7 years so yes clean. DR wanted to ween me off but he is just a OBGYN, he said he do not know enough to detox during pregnancy. OK had to take( dones) when subs ran out, the staff did not even tell him I was out! I only want the very best for the baby, I feel judged I don't want to have to take a medicine daily, send 300 dollars or more a month. People act as if I am trying to harm my baby. The Dr. Had it out with one of the staff. Sorry for going on.

Trust that you are doing what is best for your baby. Withdrawing off that smurf would have ended badly for baby during pregnancy. Your baby has a better chance withdrawing at birth. It is approved in use for pregnant women with addiction issues. Some people just aren't willing to accept and understand that, and all you can do just nod politely and thank them for their unsolicited opinions and/or advice.

It only shows last 30 days of use. If it is suspected that you have drug problems they do further testing on the placenta which shows any use from the 2nd trimester on.
