a bit worried (about formula) long
posted 8th Jan
So my son was on similac and he would throw up after just about every feeding, but would do it like an hour later. Switched to sensitive same thing. Saw a dr went back to regular similac with zantac, he would throw up right after having his medicine. Gave him a bath one day cause he threw up all over himself, after his bath (as I'm wrapping him in the towel) he throws up again, put him back in the bathtub, throws up again. Finally get him all cleaned off and he's done throwing up. Take him in the room and he spits up some more, this all happened after I gave him his medicine and then he ate.
One night he had his medicine, ate, and then was good. An hour or so later he threw up and then would go rigid, stop breathing for a couple seconds and then scream. He did that 5 times with in 2 hours. (After 2 times we took him to childrens hostpital after calling and talking to a nurse.) They said that was normal, it was just the acid coming up and the rigid/not breathing was cause it was painful, so he would tense up cause of the pain. Then found out that the zantac won't stop him from throwing up, just makes it less painful.
Took him to his Dr. And he took him off the zantac (cause it now seemed he was only throwing up after having it) also switched him to enfamil A.R. He's been doing good on that, only a few spit ups, no throwing up, until tonight. He's been on the A.R. stuff for 5 days. TMI: his throw up was all chunky, like cottage cheese. My friends mom was just saying the other night that I should switch to soy, that maybe milk wasn't good for him. She said that's what she did for her kids and the throwing up stopped completely. (She's also a maternity nurse, so she works with infants.)
So I'm wondering if I should stay with the A.R. for now (WIC will only give out similac and I talked with his dr, he'll be switching to the similac version of enfamil A.R.) and switch to the similac version when I get it from WIC, or should I talk to his Dr. about soy?

DS has really REALLY bad reflux problems so we started putting rice cereal in his bottles per his pediatrician. It has worked wonders! If you try the soy and it doesn't help maybe you should talk to his doctor about trying the cereal in the bottle. And I know that most mammas on here say that it's a choking hazard, I'm sure it can be, but DS has been doing it for a month now and has had no problems with choking.

I've heard a lot of ladies on here say that they put cereal in the bottle for acid reflux

Sounds like what I went through with my daughter. Is your DS losing weight, or not gaining very well?
My DD ended up having a milk protein sensitivity, we had to put her on similac alimentum. I would try the soy first though, similac soy is much much cheaper than the alimentum and a lactose intolerance is more common.

DD did the same. We wound up doing alimentum and rice cereal.

The AR is formula with rice. OP, I wouldn't switch without speaking with his pediatrician. Beware, most infants who cannot tolerate milk cannot tolerate soy either. How long has he been on the AR? It takes about 30 days for an infant to fully adjust to a formula, and switching too often can actually make the problems worse.

That similac maybe the similac that the dr said to see if WIC will do. I'm not sure, I couldn't hear it very well, he left a voicemail. I'm gonna check it again tomorrow right before I call wic. Is the alimentum almost the same as A.R.? Cause whatever similac it was he said its like the same thing, just different brand. Also he's gaining weight. He's 5 weeks old today.
We talked to his ped. He's the one who put us on A.R., he's been on it for 5 days. And he's the one who told me to see if WIC will give us this one kind of similac that's the same as A.R., just similac brand and has a different name than A.R. (WIC won't cover anything but similac brand) if WIC will cover it, he'll write the prescription for it.

Rice cereal really works! Pedi said anywhere to 1/2-1 tsp per oz of formula. I go with 1/2 because it gets thick and he has variable flow nipples which saves me from having to adjust his nipples on his bottles!

When I was on WIC they covered it, but needed a signature from the doc because its for allergies and is really expensive.

The WIC lady in charge of the formula (i had to call her) said they will only cover similac brand. That with a Dr.'s prescription they will cover a different kind of similac other than similac original. She said that if i dont want to switch formulas again i can buy the formula myself and then go back in 4 months and get baby food from them.
What were you getting?

Similac has many different kinds to accommodate most babies needs. We used Similac Alimentum, it's for babies with the milk protein sensitivity and other allergies. Most pediatrician offices will have sample cans of formula, check and see if you can get one so you don't have to pay for a whole can.

If i were you i would try to stick with similac so you can stay on wic. I had to get a prescription from the dr so wic would let me get the enfacare (high calorie). I get 11 cans a month now and it comes out to around $200, thats a lot of money to pay out of pocket

Yeah, that's what I'm going to do. Cause I can't afford to buy his formula! So we're gonna probably switch to the similac that's like the enfamil A.R. and his Dr. Said it was ok and that its basically the same thing, just similac brand.
I need to call WIC tomorrow and discuss which formula to use. All his Dr. Said was similac for spit up. Which, would that be the similac alimentum?

WIC will give you a paper to have the Dr fill out so you can switch the formula, thats the way it works here. Also if you have cans of unopened formula than wic may exchange them for the new kind, but im not positive

Yeah OP what misty walls said is right. I just went through this here they provide only gerber we had to switch to similac altimentum the WIC lady told me to bring the unopened cans and she would give me checks for similac altimentum for how ever many cans I brought. Similac altimentum works well for my daughter now, before she would spit up her entire bottle just about a few minutes after I fed her. The Dr recommended altimentum and she wrote a note for WIC to give me it and they approved me of it.
