emilie's birth story

posted 8th Jan
Just a few hours after me and dhs 3rd wedding anniversary which. Was the. 19th of december my water broke. So at midnight. The 20 th I woke up to pee. Went back to sleep and was awoken 35 minutes later to a popping feeling. Stood up and realized my water broke. I began to get scared as I put out all the fear of labor out of my head the whole pregnancy. I woke up dh who vegan running around like crazy. We both thought. That when your water broke that meant pain was nearby. Well I wasn't in any pain. So I calmed himdown called my mom. Took a shower and packed up ds and thedpg to take to my moms. Arrived at the hospital an hour later with just very mild cramping. Went back in triage to make sure it was my water. Then about 1 hour later got my room. Still no contractions wepl nothing close together. Hours and hours went by still not close enough contractions. Was dilated to a 3 when checked in. Finally started having some strong contractions. But they would go from 4 minutes to 10-15 minutes apart. Got pain meds that made me hurl. I was not progressing on my own like the ob had hoped. She said that I could only go so long with my water being broken and we were getting
closse. They gave my body 10 hrs to see if it would progress and notta. So we started a low dose of pitocin. Then got an epidural which wore off a few hours before pushing. At 3 p.m. december 20th I pushed for the slowest 35 minutes of my life. I felt myself tearing and wanted to give up. But didn't. Emilie marie was born 7 lbs 3 ounces 19.5 in.

can someone explain something to me?

i keep reading about women saying their epidural "wore off"

i've only given birth once so i can only go off my own experience but i was hooked up to a catherator (sp?) with a constant dose of the epidural and i was able to get extra little shots whenever i had extra pain. the epidural lasted until they took it out of my back after Luna was born. i didn't feel ANYTHING after i got the epidural. no crowning, no tearing, nothing.

so...how exactly does it "wear off"?

Sometimes they turn off the epidural early since it does last awhile after the medicine has stopped, they turned mine off before I started pushing but I was given too much I guess so I never felt anything either.
