Pacifiers??
posted 7th Jan
My boyfriend's mom INSISTS that we not use pacifiers when Bayleigh is born because of all the problems they cause with a child's mouth. However, my mom used pacifiers for all four of her kids and we never had speech problems, overbites, etc. What are your opinions?

I think that it is your choice as a parent. I never used one and DS never wanted one. I can tell you the people I know that used them had horrible times weaning them off of them. My ex's daughter was still on one at 4 and had severe dental problems, but that is because of him. I wouldn't overuse it or let them stay on one forever but still your choice.

I think that if I do, it'll only be for the first few months. I definitely wouldn't let her have them passed three months..I've heard that thats when babies really start developing habits, but who knows.

My kids never took them. I think there is a time and place for pacifiers because babies love to comfort suck.

I've used pacifiers with all my children. We don't have speech problems or horrible dental issues. Weaning wasn't difficult for us, either.

I used them with all of my kids but they gave them up on their own by around 4 months. I think the dental problems come with using them when the kid gets older.

Personally myself I'd much rather a child suck a soother then a thumb or finger. My oldest had hers until around 20 months or so it was pretty easy to break her of it. My youngest won't take one, I really wish she would though -__- lol.

This. and when they are used all the time. I had a friend who had a 4 year old who literally had the thing in her mouth 24/7. She wouldn't even pull it out to talk she just like bit down on it talked and went back to sucking.

I used a pacifier with our first and she only sucked on it till she was 3months then she started to teeth and only wanted to chew on it. lol. our second we tried to give her one but she didn't want it..she likes her thumb, but she is 2.5 now and only does it when she is tired. So I haven't seen a problem personally.

I let DD have one and was lucky enough that she didn't want one after 3 or 4 months. I will probably not give this baby one unless I think he needs it. I doubt I'd get so lucky again.

honestly, pacifiers are better than letting them suck their thumb, bc you can take that away after a while... they don't cause as many problems as some say they do, but def wouldn't let LO use it after about a year. (I saw a little girl who looked about 4 or 5 sucking on one, which is pretty bad)

It's easier to take away a pacifier than to get a kid to stop sucking their thumb. But we tried to give DD a pacifier because it can reduce the risk of SIDS and all that, but she wasn't interested....and now she's sucking her thumb, lol

opinions are like...... personaly, i think they are fine to a point, you just have to know that there is a chance they will not give them up on their own and it can be a battle. We had a hard time with our first, but she was 3..and that was not happening. But realisticaly it will not hurt them in the long run, and for some babies it really helps them. heck! i had one until i was 3 and i turned out just fine!

i didn't use one ever with my son, but the pedi said it would reduce the risk of sids and best if used from 4weeks to 4 months and that after 4 months that then they r not that good for the baby, but everyone is different..just be careful if you choose not to stick to your guns, my SO's mom went out and would try giving my son one if i wasn't around and tell her son to do so as well needless to say it sucked and caused a lot of fights, i expected SO to stand up for me and what I wanted and yet he wouldn't ...I should of just screamed out loud and told them to screw off...

We use pacis. My daughter is 18 months, and my son is three months. My daughter doesn't have speech, or dental problems. She just loves her paci.
