So now I'm the bad guy?

So my neighbor and I are really close (he's gay so not that kind of close lol)
and he is a huge animal "lover" like me.
He has two little chihuahuas and two kittens that are like 5 months old. Well he is getting mad at them for knocking over his hand made fence that keeps the dogs in the kitchen while he's at work so today he decided that the cats are going to be indoor/outdoor cats.
Umm no.
They have never been outside before, they haven't done anything wrong, and it's like under 20 degrees outside!  
He's been trying to get rid of them for a while now but he wont let them go to just anyone and they HAVE to go together. I'm sorry but I would rather my cats get separated than to have to spend the day out in the winter.
So when I got home from work I saw one of the kittens hiding in this empty flower pot and the poor thing was shaking like a leaf.  
So yeah, I picked him up, took him inside, and let him in.
I know, I know. Not my cat not my business. But SO wont let me take them and how could I just leave the poor thing to sit outside when it was cold and terrified?
Well then he gets mad at me for letting him in because now the other one isn't going to be able to find it's way home  
No if the cat doesn't come back it's because you threw it into the cold and someone picked it up, or it got hit.

Idk. I know it wasn't my place to let the cat in but I just couldn't help myself.  
I wish I could just take them in and find them new homes. I use to do that. I use to foster. But now SO wont even think of me doing anything like that.

Right!?! I mean yeah, I know a lot of people don't consider animals as family or even worthy beings of being treated fairly. But I couldn't leave the baby out in the cold. And he's going to do it all over again tomorrow.
I can't call animal control because they will just kill the cats. And no where will take kittens their age.
And he refuses to use craigslist.  

I would have done the same thing. I also would have told SO to shove it and kept the cat. If the neighbor asked, I'd play dumb lol

Lol I really want to. And I wouldn't need to play dumb either. The only way he's ever been willing to separate them is if I take the one that I let in.
For some reason it's really connected to me   And it kills me too because other than SO I have a cat here at home who is exactly like him other than looks and I know he would be jealous

Aww. My four cats hate each other, but they don't fight anymore. Just ignore each other.

You should secretly find them homes and just let the neighbour think they ran away. Doesn't sound like he's much of an animal lover, honestly.

I would have taken it in too. That's horrible to put them outside in that kind of weather.
