Schooling...

posted 7th Jan
I dont want to send either of my kids to public school. Dont really have enough for catholic or private school but considering letting them go to a free charter until 6th grade. Right now they are with other kids and interact and are perfectly fine. I plan on letting them be involved in activities too. I have my heart set on cyber school but issues with that. I work right now and I dont think a daycare would take them in the day since no other school age kids are there. Also Im not sure how to get them to do school work ya know. So thats an issue and then I worry that they wont have enough friends.

So I'd like to hear why I should or shouldnt send them to cyber school etc. Also would like to hear how parents that do this manage.
Thanks!
ETA: My oldesnt is gonna be 4 this summer so it would be for next school year.

I'd sit down and write out an good old fashioned pros and cons list. We homeschool, but I pour myself into it and work very hard to ensure they're where they need to be both academically and socially.

You shouldn't do cyber school because it sounds like you don't know enough to teach them or have any type of plan. Teaching is really hard and if you can not be home during the day to teach them, then they need up be in school.

I agree 100%

This, too....I do wonder how it will even be possible if you won't be there. I mean, they'll need direction & attention.

I dont need to teach them with cyber school. They have both virtual and work at your on pace classes. I know enough about it since I graduated from one... They dont need to do their school work the hours I have work.

What kind of program do you use?

I disagree entirely. No matter what type of school your child is in, it is ultimately your job to teach them.

Elementary school is very, very different.

You are teaching them basic skills, whereas high school you are building on skills they've learned previously.

You are going to set your kids up for failure.

My friend has her daughter in a program where it is like homeschooling but it is a group of kids who get taught by a certified teacher but they have maybe 5-10 kids all together.
Its pretty neat, they even go on field trips & stuff. I would just look into it more. Is there anyone else who could teach them since you can't during the day? maybe a grandparent? Good luck

I've used a variety of curricula this first year, but next year I'll be using a full "all included" curricula plan. Currently we're focusing on teaching our daughter to read using Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons.

I am a SAHM and planning on homeschooling. My oldest will be 2 in February and compulsory education here does not start until age 7 (first grade). So I have until 2018 until he has to go to school. You need to check with your state laws on education for home school/private schools so you know what you are getting into. I am also going to school for my Associate's to get a degree in Early Childhood Education which covers to 3rd grade and I have family and friends who are all teachers so I can get help where it is a subject I am not comfortable with teacher.

For the online charter schools you really need to check with your state laws because they all vary immensely.

A co-op, those are wonderful. They are very different from a cyber school (generally speaking.) We're involved in two right now, and we love ours.

State laws....definitely something to look into! Some states are very strict, others more lenient.
