ban drop down cots (drop side cribs)

posted 7th Jan
i now i have already posted this but im really trying to reach as many people as possible

we now have an e petition to go with it the group, can everyone please help by signing it

My friends little girl (in the video link) tragically lost her life when one of the sides dropped down on its own, trapping her head and suffocating her, this is a known problem which has been acknowledged in the USA as they are now banned there, we are trying to get the same thing here in the UK

These awful drop down cots need banning from the UK, i cant for the life of me think of a legitimate reason to why they haven't been yet, the USA have so now its time to follow in there foot steps

here is a clip of the little girl who lost her life because of this type of cot, R.I.P
Ashlea-Mae (there is is a typo with the dates but i promise this IS legitimate)

please join this group and help spread the word

I am using the same drop down crib from when I was an infant with both of my kids and have never had an issue with it. It is not the drop down crib itself but the quality of cribs that are being made now versus how they used to be made 20+ years ago.

Best of luck with your petition

Since when are they banned here in the US?

I just bought one a few years ago, and the ones I've been looking at are drop down.

They've been banned I think within the last 1-2 yrs. there was a huge recall and consignment stores have even refused to resell them. Idk I had a drop side from 200? That I used in 09 and 11 with no problems. It served 3 boys before my girls and if the neighbors kid had not broken it I'd be reusing it w this one.

thank you hun, things just are not made to the same standard these days and if the manufacturers can not be bothered to acknowledge and rectify the faults then yes the newer ones should be banned

U want an honest answer? Bc most of the time the injuries of kids getting hurt were preventable. idt it was the manufacturers fault that some of those parents left 3+ yr olds in them. What did they think was going to happen? Of course some of those kids had broken legs and stuff from kicking at the slats until they broke. As for the drop side part... I'm not so sure those parents didn't make sure the side was up properly. I always double and triple checked that the side was up and locked before I left the room. accidents happen but at some point I think parents should take responsibility too instead of blaming the product (bumbos are a good example). Yes I feel bad for the parents whose kids died and r.i.p. little ones but I don't think all drop sides should be banned.

how horrible do you sound, thats your opinion and the facts are statistics show otherwise, i would love for you to say that to any of these parents who have lost their child this way, god forbid it ever happens to you

Facts and statistics also showed some of those injuries were preventable whether one wants to admit it or not. You posted on a public forum and I answered honestly. Not my fault you don't like my response. There are plenty of ppl in the US who still use drop sides without incident.

SMH whether i like your response or not, these companies are obviously going to find "facts" to prove it was not their responsibility, good luck to all those that do use them, thats their choice but not everyone is quite as happy as you are to put their child in danger

Actually the companies started recalls when the older kids started breaking the slats so no they didn't find facts to prove they weren't responsible. They decided to start the recalls before tragedy struck.

not good enough, lets hope that there is never a day something happens to your children and people are as rude as you and blame you for your childs misfortune

Wow that's 3 times now you've tried to bring my kids into this. It is good enough. How long have drop sides been around? How many parents have purchased them and everything turned out fine? I am not trying to blame the parents but in some of the less severe cases it should've been common sense to remove the crib. I am sorry for the loss of your friends kid that was a freak accident and should not have happened but i dont agree that it was the manufacturers fault or that bc of it all drop sides should be banned. It's no ones fault. I do think that bc of the situations cribs should be better made like adding secure locks to the side, spacing the slats closer together, allowing the adjustable mattress to drop lower, etc.

you made the point of saying "look how long they have been around", well this in my eyes make it worse, as that means they have had ALL THAT TIME to rectify the faults and are STILL getting it wrong, products are supposed to get better not worse

I've seen questioning comments along the lines of 'How can this possibly happen?' and 'I thought drop down cots worked in such a way' etc ..there are lots of people just trying to understand the situation. I understand people want to know the facts, but if you ask me it doesn't matter how, why or when. The fact is a drop down cot took a the life of a beautiful little girl far too early, as they have many other children. One death is a death too many. Good on Sophie (Ashlea's mum) for trying to make other parents aware and ensuring the safety of many, many other Children. I, from one parent to another, thank her and send her my best wishes & I really hope from the bottom of my heart that her campaign is successful
