Do you make your own cleaning solutions?

posted 7th Jan
So the more I think about it all, the more I want to make my own stuff since I am a SAHM and have a lot of free time. So why not make my own shampoo or dish soap or what ever else especially if it is going to save me money. I found a two things on pinterest that I have tried. The first is soaking citrus peels in distilled vinegar to take away the vinegar smell. The second is mixing 1:1 dish soap and white vinegar to clean the bathtub/shower. Well I used the vinegar solution I made and Sun dish soap and have to say it worked amazing to clean my shower. I was shocked at all the crap that came off the walls and tub. I used it in the toilet last night to scrub it and it was effortless in cleaning.

So that got me to thinking, are there any good liquid dish soap recipes (not for dishwasher)? What other solutions do you make at home for cleaning whether it is laundry, shampoo, or what ever. Also how much does it cost you versus buying?

We have not bought laundry soap in 7 months. We bought the big jug of it from Sam's Club and still have quite a bit left. We paid $25. Dish Soap is about $30oz and I pay $0.97 and buy every month or so. Dishwasher soap varies depending on what we buy since I have been experimenting as we have hard water and not all detergents work well. Last time I bought detergent was 2 weeks ago and spent $4 on a small box of Finish because that seems to work the best next to the Finish Quantum tablets (the tablets get expensive though). I still have probably another two weeks to go with the box. I typically use Comet/Ajax to clean the tub and toilet so that is $0.97 maybe every two months (I don't clean a ton because it never seems to get terrible dirty). So if there is a way to make my own stuff that has less chemicals and very little increase in cost over what I pay then I am all for it

Sorry it is sort of long and detailed. And TIA

Baking soda and water is a great shampoo and Apple cider vinegar works adas conditioner. It only works if you don't have hard water

Yeah we have hard water though it is not terrible but still effects how the dishes come out of the dishwasher. I never realized it living at my parents who are about 4 blocks away but I also didn't really care about much that went on when I lived there.

I haven't made my own solutions yet but that's cause I haven't run out of what we had before. I have started the no shampoo method though. I also just made myself a reusable wet jet pad cause I wasn't about to buy more and it works awesome!

DH wants a wetjet. We have a swiffer but it hardly ever gets used and I mop the floors on my hands and knees since that is what I grew up doing and prefer it to using a mop. I saw the re-usable pads for swiffers though and contemplated making one but I still have the same box of swiffer pads from when I bought it a year and a half ago and it is only half gone.

What is the no shampoo method? I wash my hair like every other day could probably go to two days in between but my hair starts getting really oily after that, and when I wash it every day it gets really oily.

Sorry, I just saw this now.

The reason I like the wetjet is because we have wooden floors and I've been on my hands and knees scrubbing before but with the wood can only do it so often. DD drops her snacks and eats them off the floor   so needless to say I'm running over it with the wetjet about 2 times a day on top of the sweeping.

Google the no-poo method. It's basically getting rid of shampoo and conditioner. You replace it with baking soda for shampoo and apple cider vinegar for conditioner. 1 tbs basking soda/1 cup water mixed and use it as you would shampoo (doesn't lather though) and then same measurements for the vinegar. Wash with "shampoo" then rinse, then the "conditioner" which will smell like vinegar but when your hair dries it goes away. It's soo much better for your scalp and your hair and super frickin cheap! Most ladies only have to wash their hair about every 3-5 days with this method because you don't build up as much oil.

Anyways, Google it cause there's tons of links that can explain it and why it's better and whatnot. I'm letting my hair dry right now and it is super soft
