One Hour Anatomy Scan?

posted 7th Jan
I'm 21 weeks 6 days and today is my anatomy scan.
I had an anatomy scan with my now two year old at 20 weeks 2 days and it was 5 minutes tops.
I am hearing of friends of mine who are having a one hour scan and I wants one.
Is it something only done for high risk pregnancies? Can I ask for one?

Honestly.........Why would you want one?

When I got to a certain point, ultrasounds hurt. She would press on my hip bones, my ovaries, everything...And it was quite painful.

I lost my first baby in the second trimester and I wanna be sure everything is ok.
How far along were you when they hurt?
The last one I had with my two year old was 3D/4d Ultrasound at 28 weeks 2 days and it didn't hurt too bad. but I didn't have another for the duration of the pregnancy.

The anatomy scan should never take 5 minutes. There is way to much stuff to check. They usually last around 20-40 minutes (sometimes longer) depending on how the baby is cooperating. They have to check all the measurements, check the heart, blood flow, all the valves, the kidneys, the brain, the cord, the sex if you ask.

Yes I had a long one this last pregnancy. It was to check to make sure everything looked good on baby like the heart, and spine and things like that. Plus the gender of course. I think all 3 of children's gender one was long but I can't quite remember for sure.

mine was 45 minutes... they need to check everything in detail, no way could that be done in 5 minutes!

Your insurance most likely won't pay for a one hour scan & your doctors office (or where ever you go for your ultrasounds) probably won't book out a one hour spot for an ultrasound. I'm high risk and the scans I get are only 10-30 minutes tops. It all depends on what my doctor wants looked at. I have a feeling your friend might be lying to you.

You can pay for an ultrasound out of pocket and maybe ask for an hour. I doubt anyone would do it though. There's really no point to even have a lot of ultrasounds done (especially lengthy ones) unless there is something wrong.

The 4D place I go to (& pay out of pocket for) do 45 minute ultrasounds.

Oh & my anatomy scan only lasted about 40 minutes because DS wouldn't cooperate for the tech. I don't see how one could last an hour.

Makes sense. Maybe it was 15 minutes or so? It was some time ago. I know it was for sure not an hour though.
I'll be asking my OB all sorts of questions today that I never thought of with my two year old DD.

Ohh. I thought you meant you just wanted one for the hell of it. Hah. I had my first at 20 weeks and then....I had one at 36 weeks and another at 36 weeks and 5 days. The one at 36 weeks was the most painful for me. I honestly felt like she was stabbing through my uterus.

With my second my first anatomy scan was an hour because they were having issues checking the heart chambers. They finally called it a day and had me come back in a few weeks. There really isn't a set time just once they check everything they need to check.

Oh that makes a lot of sense.
Don't think she's lying, cuz I did just see her ultrasound picture. Maybe that's just what her oB calls it because it can, but usually doesn't take up to an hour? Hmm.
Yeah thinking back I'm sure it was more than 5 minutes, but I don't think it was any longer than 15 20 minutes or so. She was coopertave with gender and I guess he saw all that he needed to see.
Can't wait for 3:30 PST to come so I can see my baby and ask all the questions I never thought of two a few years ago.

My pregnancy is normal (not high risk) and my Anatomy scan took about an hour. It was last Thursday and the US tech had no problem getting the pics really but it took FOREVER to get all of them. and she kept double checking the sex (we are so sure its a girl) my insurance is medicaid and I really doubt it matters what insurance you have. Just ask them how long it normally takes for the scan before they start. and if they are checking for everything it will take some time. especially if baby is moving too much or in a weird position.

lol no I'm just paranoid. Especially since my fiance's brother's baby had problems in the womb. So far our daughter has past ultrasound and blood test inspection with flying colors. but I really won't feel completely anxiety free until I deliver.
Ow. I can see how 36 weeks could be painful. By 34 weeks with DD everything hurt. Even moving. She liked to press her butt firmly into what felt like my rib cage lol.

Oh ok thank you. Gonna try and get a pic to post in our due date thread, but last time my OB was like... "She's too big to get all of her in the pic so here's the head. It looked weird TBH lol.
I am just sitting here wishing the time would fly faster.
