Is this rude?

posted 7th Jan
My brother in law is a real sweet guy. He's growing his hair out "for the kids". Problem is, he hasn't gotten a cut in over 7 years.

His hair is SO badly damaged, I know they won't take his hair. I've explained this to him before and told him he needs to get it trimmed at least twice a year to have it grow healthy.

He's agreed with me, albeit while he's been drinking, and says he'll go get his hair cut. A couple months ago he said he started using a Green tea treatment for his hair. I repeated that it won't do him any good unless he gets the damaged ends cut. He said he'd go.

His birthday is coming up in a few days. Is it rude to get him a gift certificate to a hair salon?

I don't think it's rude, but don't get pissed if he doesn't use it. He's not obligated to use said birthday present, you know.

No. Even if he decides not to cut it, he can go get professional treatments done, which will help alot. I agree with you though, it probably wont matter, he needs to cut off the dead ends.

Why is his hair damaged? What kind of damage is he doing to it? Is he getting it colored or permed? I can't fathom why it would be so "damaged". Maybe it just looks damaged to you because he doesn't do anything with it. If he has a lot of natural curl/frizz, hair can look quite damaged when it's not. My hair looks like a hot mess when ther eis no product in it....seriously. It's just curly & needs a lot of the right stuff to look healthy. It is healthy though. It's just crazy looking when there is no product in it.

I was wondering this too, actually. My hair looks pretty smurffy when I over wash it or bleach it or don't style it at all, but it takes some serious hair product damage to get it to a noticeably bad state... And I use a hot iron and hair dryer on it every time I shower, so I do a lot of heat damage. There are treatments over the counter for any kind of damaged hair...

I didn't get my hair trimmed for 3 years from 12-15 and donated my hair with no problems. Idk, why you're being so hard on him...if he doesn't want to go get it trimmed or cut its his choice.....

Here's the guidelines for hair donation it doesn't say anything about having to trim your hair twice a year

His hair has TONS of split ends, it starts off full and thins out at about 6 inches into barely anything and he said it hasn't grown in the past 3 years.

I don't think your being rude, but just getting it trimmed just helps it grow. My hair has a smurf ton of split ends and I haven't had it trimmed for a while, but its still healthy.

Split ends aren't unhealthy, they're just unappealing. Locks of love would still take it. And there ARE treatments that would help with that, my stylist gave me a packet of stuff that worked WONDERS on my split ends.

a haircut has no effect on how fast your hair grows. Whether you trim it or not, hair grows about half an inch (1.3 centimeters) every month [source: Foss]. That growth rate won't speed up if you take more hair off the bottom, and if you're trimming off more than that each month, then you cut off all the new growth. The only factors that have been proven to affect the rate at which hair grows are genetics, hormones and diet

So it must not be growing due to genetics, hormones and diet lol Anyway, we got him a book instead

I'm sure it's growing. I'm sure it's also splitting before it gets any real length to it anymore. He needs some deep treatments, and possibly yes, at this point, a trim, to fix severe split ends. Although I have no clue how it could be THAT damaged...

There is a limit for hair length for different people based on how long a hair gets before it falls out & how fast their hair grows That is why no matter how long someone doesn't cut their hair, some people never gets past their waist & others will go to the floor. Mine tends to be fast growing. So does my Ds. Dh's hair grows very slow.
