swallowing food

Is it normal for lo not swallow the food in his mouth as he's eating??? I think he's swallowed then he opens it and its all sitting in there. Eventually he does, most of the time he coughs and sometimes gags...He's almost 10.5 months ...will he eventually get used to it??
