Honestly, I'd go for a canon (shush nikon lovers!) if you're going for a low end model because the low end nikons don't have auto focus motors in them and therefore you have to buy the more expensive lens that does.
I'd start out with a canon and the 50mm 1.8 lens (1.4 if you can afford it because it's substantially better.)
But it takes A LOT of time and practice to get better. It won't just happen in two days so don't give up.
