Kid w/adverse anesthesia, please read.

posted 7th Jan
My DS has to have a root canal tomorrow on a tooth he hurt over a year ago. A partial thing was done while he was awake and filled and the dentist is trying to save it because his adult teeth are no where close to coming in.

He was put under general anesthesia once before and it took him way longer than it should have to wake up. I was told 10-20 minutes before I could see him and he took an hour. Then he threw up the entire way home.

Is the sedation meds for dental procedures on a root canal the same as general anesthesia? I'm getting a little concerned for tomorrow.

I don't think they'll actually put him under for a dental procedure. Maybe if you tell them about his previous reaction they can start him on a smaller dose of the gas until they get him to a good point for him.

Its not meant to have the same effect, sedation is when you are not fully under , but when I had my wizdom teeth out in my oral surgons rooms I was only meant to be sedated, they told me I would be able to hear them and not feel anything but presure.
The sedative totaly knocked me out cold, I felt as though I had been put under a general Anesthetic I ended up in hospital as they could not fully wake me up. I did not stop throwing up for two days, they put it down to the fact that I am sensitive/allergic to that particular sedative.

That sounds like a horrible experience.

Food to know about the sedation and what it's supposed to do.
