re: What questions should I ask NICU doctors?
posted 7th Jan
Thank you everyone for the advice I feel sooooo much more prepared now! I hate alll these doctors keep asking me "Do you have any more questions?" I know it's good that they're not totally rushing out the door but it makes me feel like I should have more questions or something and if I don't I feel weird( mostly my high risk doc). And they never tell me when they're coming so I don't even have a chance to think ahead of time.

You definitely don't need any kind of wrap for kangaroo care. I think It's easiest to just wear a hospital gown backwards and lay him on your belly.

I didn't get to ask questions because he was taken right after birth and it was spur of the moment. But I would ask how many drs he will see I love the dr that we seen but the last 2 days he was in the nicu they switched drs and he was not American && I couldn't understand him at all

awesome! I know you will do ok. Maybe get in touch with a local LLL leader and ask for a leader with NICU experience.

When you first do skin to skin, they may not allow you to use a wrap, that's one thing u should ask too. The LC I had at the hospital was great and they will have one associated with the NICU.

I'm in MA too, but I haven't been to the baystate hospital. I always ended up at the ones in boston (St. Elizabeth's to be specific) For us the rule for visitors was the parents. Any kids under 2 weren't allowed, especially during cold/flu season. During cold/flu season, it was immediate family only. Me and the hubby were the only ones allowed to hold him until we were transferred out of the NICU. Moby wraps might be tricky with all of the wires and tubes and stuff at first, but I bet it would be great when he gets transferred to the special care nursery and doesn't have so much stuff on him.
Have you looked into the ronald mcdonald houses in the area? They offer places to stay for parents with kids in the hospitals. That way it might take some of the pressure off of finding an apartment during all of this other stuff. Sometimes they provide food too.
I haven't had any *bad* experiences with the hospital's LC's in the NICU and on the regular delivery floor, but they can be a little aggressive. I think if i was a new mom and it was my first time breastfeeding, i wouldn't have felt like they were being so pushy. My youngest was in the NICU for a bit when he was born. That was the only time i bumped into the NICU LC.
My youngest son was a borderline preemie and he had some other issues because I got an infection when i didn't realize my water was leaking. Anyway, they just needed to have him eat every 2 hours regardless of whatever else was going on. If he didn't nurse, they would give him a bottle. (which is fine and normal procedure). It made trying to get him to wake up to nurse a real pain in the rear. I stayed in a room at the hospital while I was nursing. They'd page me every 2 hours around the clock. We survived though and breastfed until a couple of weeks ago. he's 14 months now.
Good luck!

Thanks I'm crocheting my first blanket so that's taking up some time. It's a baby blanket and once I finish it I'm going to make one for my son too.
