In college, I was studying to be a psychologist and while I have changed my major I do remember discussions about the genetic influence of these things in children. In abnormal psych we learned that every disorder is both genetic and environmental. She has the genetic make up for it but if she's raised in a loving home there's a good chance it won't develop. It still can but the likelihood is less.

I disagree. I understand this is just how you were taught but I disagree. I was raised in a loving home. I have no genetic disposition for some of my mental illnesses, no one in my family has some of the things I have. So I can't help but think its bunk that if you're raised in a loving home you won't be diagnosed with mental illness. I'm sorry   I don't mean to offend you.

You aren't offending me   I understand that sometimes it just happens. I mean these disorders have to start somewhere in the genetic pool so of course some people get them with no reason whatsoever but there are ways to combat at least the intensity of the disorder if you have it and know your child is at risk. The good news is if you already have the disorder you can teach your kids how to handle it and they truly aren't alone

Yep. If my daughter gets any of my mental illnesses she will be extremely supported. And know she can come to me and know that I've been there

Same with my son. It's all you really can do for your kids. Be there for them and take care of them while they need it.
