Image of Jesus.
posted 6th Jan
This is something me and my father was talking about the other day, I'm sure most of you guys have seen the "Like if you love Jesus, ignore if you don't" or "Like and share if you would let him in" pictures on Facebook, and in the image there is a white man with long brown hair and blue/green eyes. Where did this begin? My dad did research a little and said the image was actually one of the Greek gods (I forget which one. Maybe Zeus?)
And a question for the Christians (I mean NO disrespect, this is a genuine question) Would this be classified as idol worship?

If people were praying and worshiping the PHOTO of "Jesus" or I guess whatever Greek God they took the photo from, then it would be idol worship. If they thought the photo of Jesus was an idol of Jesus himself, then it would be idol worship. But just sharing a photo of Jesus and asking if you would let Jesus into your heart would not be idol worship.

Even though the chances are slim to none that that's what Jesus would of looked like?

I think the stuff on Facebook is stupid. Jesus said himself that you should pray on your own, that your faith is personal and private.

If someone knew that Jesus looked like Bill Cosby and shared a photo of Kevin Smith, calling him Jesus, that would be idol worship. But those photos of Jesus are widely accepted as his image. And again, they're not praying to this photo. It's just some facebook fad to "prove" you love Jesus.

I wonder if the photo would be as accepted if it was an image of a middle eastern man? Dark skin, dark hair, dark eyes. /shrug

We imagine a Jesus similar to ourselves, for relational purposes. It's just "normal".
I don't hang a cross around my neck or have a picture of "what Jesus would look like to me", anywhere.
I don't think it's "idol worship", however. If a Biblical Jesus is who you worship, in your heart, you aren't worshiping an idol. Zeus, for example, is an idol, as he is an imagined god who wields no power. A picture of Zeus would be idolatry.
As a matter of fact, ANYTHING you love more than God could be considered an idol. Nature, money....anything.

But it's just so obviously not what he looked like.. He wouldn't have had long hair, it mentions long hair being too feminine. And he was middle eastern. European Artists basically just decided to depict him that way and it stuck.

I pay no attention to those things. God knows my heart I don't need to "like " a picture to prove it. I also don't pay much attention to any image. No one knows what Jesus looked like so the images are known to be inaccurate so why give them more respect than they deserve.

No, I don't see it as idolatry. I think it is quite annoying though, the whole like of you love Jesus or like if you're against child abuse....It's redundant.
The very first representations of Jesus were of symbols like fish or a lion laying with a lamb, etc then artists portrayed their versions.
Although no one knows what he looks like, we can gather clues...Jesus was a Jew and walked everywhere so naturally his skin would be dark due to being in the sun. His hair on the sides and beard would be unruly because it was prohibited for a Jewish male to trim those parts of his hair. Also, Isaiah said Jesus had no beauty, nothing in his appearance that attracted....but it's ironic that Satan is portrayed as being handsome.

Since a child, Ive always imagined Jesus as being black or Middle Eastern. When I pray that is the image that comes up in my mind. We have to give a face to His name...and thats just the one I chose. So no I dont think of it as idol worship since no clear portrait of him exists besides descriptors.

I know! 'Tis a shame too!
He's the most beautiful creation...and the most evil.
It gives new meaning to the phrase "beauty is only skin deep".

Well he was the angel of light before he was cast down, I can't imagine an angel of light being bad looking anyway!
I don't think satan is a bad guy. If he was, he wouldn't be punishing the bad people for god, he'd be wreaking havoc with them!
