re: Breastfeeding help!

posted 10th Jan
I tried pumping today and LITERALLY had next to nothing. BUT... when we were breastfeeding I could feel the milk coming out so I KNOW she is getting some, just not sure how much.

I saw her pedi 2 days ago & asked about a prescription from him. He said that if fenugreek isn't making a difference then chances are a prescription will not either. He said that for whatever reason some women just cannot pump & produce a ton of milk & the moms will try everything in the book but nothing works. (I think I am one of those lol) but he did say that the #1 thing you can do is just keep introducing the breast to baby. Pumping & breastfeeding. Before I wasn't breastfeeding at EVERY SINGLE feeding but the past week I've basically popped my boob out every single hour lol & it looks to me like I have a little more milk when I squeeze it but still nothing when I pump. So weird.

^ supplemental nursing system. It will be one of your best friends. I have heard great things about em. You can use formula and your pumped milk in order to greatly stimulate your supply. The suckling will do the most. Pumping is not as effective for some moms.
I would use an SNS and pump right after each feeding. That should get your supply up in no time especially with the medication from the doctor and the fenugreek!
You can also add in goats rue and blessed thistle to the mix. They are all safe to take together.

My friend had more luck with reglan then funagreek.
You can mix the two anyway. It will make a difference. Everyones body chemistry is different.

Umm, try just latching baby and stop the formula maybe or at the very least feed her until she is full and then top her off. Don't just feed her with formula first if possible.
It will decrease your supply.

Def push for the medication though. It's worth a try. Everyone is different and different things work for different people.

I never formula feed her first, I always breastfeed first then if she's still hungry (which 9xs out of 10 she is) I give her formula.

Stop supplementing. Feed longer and more often and your supply will increase, supplementing makes it WORSE. If baby is still hungry after one boob, switch to the other, then back again, etc. It'll be a pain but every time you give her formula you are taking away time at the breast that would be bringing up your supply.

Hmm, I would try for a week to not give any formula and just latch her 24-7. Even if it means you have to latch her constantly. There is a thing called a nurse in which means to leave your shirt off for a day or two and just be lazy with your baby nursing all day. Within a couple of days your supply should pick up pretty well, even if you can't seem to pump all that much. Pumping is not an indication of how much milk you make. Only lack of wet diapers and weight loss are.
It is known that if you breastfeed and offer a bottle baby will still choose the bottle even if they are not hungry anymore because its in front of them. Granted I am sure you know your babies hunger cues but it could also be that her tummy has been stretched from doing both so reducing formula might be a good idea?

Here is an article on how to safely stop giving formula to top baby off.
