Pumping question

posted 6th Jan
So I decided after LO is a month old that I would try pumping..... Well I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but when i was pumping it just hurt so much.... I finally got use to it and then finished I look down and it looked red and raw.... I had broke a whole bunch of capillaries and it now hurts so much.... I have no issues with this while BF.... Has this ever happened to anyone else and what might i be doing wrong?

It could be that the pump head that attaches to your breast is to small?

If your using a pump with hard plastic pieces that attach to the breast, they're called flanges and you may be using the wrong size. I also have to use a little nipple butter because the pulling hurts. Also, maybe you need a more gentle pump. I love my Madela harmony. It's a hand pump and it honestly is just as efficient and a million times more comfy than my pump in style.

Oh... but i was only given the one flange size.... where can you get nipple butter... I have never even heard of that?

You can buy replacement flanges. The standard size doesn't work for everyone. Did you try adjusting suction? I always used mine on pretty much the lowest setting possible.

The flanges and nipple butter is usually in the same isle as the bottles and breast pumps. I recommend Madela tender care lanolin. And you can google how a flange should look when it fits.

This happened to me when I tried electric pumps even if I used it on low   my nips would be so raw and sore to where I couldn't touch them.. I switched to a hand held and never had a problem afterwards , could very well be the pump you are using
