Gestational Diabetes

posted 6th Jan
This is my second pregnancy, i'm almost 34 weeks along and my doctor has confirmed that I have GD. I did not have this with my first child so this is new to me. I was just wondering if they are supposed to do an ultrasound or some kind of exam to see how big she is getting so they would know if they should induce early or not? My doctor hasn't told me anything and hasn't answered any of my questions, I've read alot about this and just wanted someone else's opinion.

I asked the nurses about it because my doctor won't talk to me, but they have said that they will not be doing any more ultrasounds on me whatsoever. So thats why i was wondering how do they see how big the baby is?! I can already tell that she is alot bigger than my first born. She moves harder and alot more, and feels like she is about to burst out of my stomach lol.

I had gestational diabetes. There were never really any extra ultrasounds. Most likely you will have to have weekly NSTs (non stress tests) when it gets closer to time. If you control your diet, and watch it closely baby will be a normal size   I did very well with my diet, and DS was only 7lbs 3oz when he was born   very healthy and he had no blood sugar issues when he was born. If you have any questions PM me

thank you i appreciate it! Like i said i'm new to this so i dont know exactly what happens. they just told me to check my blood sugar twice a day for 2 weeks and give them the results. Ive been watching my diet and drinking water or unsweet tea. In the mornings/afternoons it's been in between 60-110mg/dL and evenings have been 155-208mg/dL and have gotten very dizzy this last time i tested it.

I don't have gd but I failed my one hour glucose test and then my 3 hour test came back extremely abnormal.
Basically, during my 3 hour test my one hour results were like 2 times higher than they should have been but my 2 hour and 3 hour results were completely normal. They told me that they had no clue what that meant so they gave me an ultrasound to see how big the baby was.

If I was measuring big they said they would have put me on insulin but since she was measuring fine they aren't going to do anything.

I would think that they'd at least do an ultrasound around 36-ish weeks to check the size. It sounds odd that they aren't even considering it.

Generally most doctors want you to keep it under 100 (testing 2 hours after you've eaten). the highest mine had ever gotten was around 135 after eating at chilis. I always tried to keep it under 115, though.

I'm sure they'll do one eventually. She's got 6 weeks left! I had two done during my NSTs but for reasons other than seeing how big he was. Had they not done that, I'm sure they would have scheduled one for me. If they are concerned they will. At this point, if baby is big there's nothing that can be done other than giving birth via c-section.

I am kind of surprised though, that you're just now being diagnosed with it. I was diagnosed at 28 weeks...

In general, blood sugars below 140 1 hour after starting to eat a meal is the guidance. Although you should follow your doctor's guidance. It should be lower than that if you are testing 2 hours after a meal. Many women keep their blood sugar levels lower than that - like I said it depends on your doctor. If they didn't tell you what number you should call and ask the nurse.

If you are concerned about your blood sugar level, you can do 10-15 minutes walking to lower it. Doctors usually start with diet and exercise to control before they go to medications. They can tell some of the size by measuring your fundal (?) height for your baby and how much weight you have gained. *just my 2c*

i was diagnosed with GD a week ago at 30 weeks and i have already seen a diabetic midwife, been given a monitor to keep a check on it at home, had a growth scan to check babies weight, been booked in for another growth scan for 2 weeks time and to see consultant regarding well being and induction of labour. I am not sure if maybe diffrent hospitals do it the same but i think if your not happy or you are worried then speak up to your doctor? The main reason for the scan is to check on babies cord , blood flow, heart, placenta, and then weight of baby, all can be effected by GD. But maybe if your level has come back low and your tummy measurements are ok that could be why they are happy to go on as normal?
