East Indian Women (Question)

I work in a bridal store and this girl, her sister, and mother came in to pick out a wedding gown.
The mother is about in her 60's and has scars down both sides of her face, three on each side.... I was curious if it is/was a cultural thing, or if it was an accident, assault, 'punishment' ?. I didn't want to ask them because I thought it was rude.
Google isn't telling me anything.

Were the scars in the same place, length and shape on both sides?

Ya they were which is why in confused because I asked my SO and he said it could have been an accident. One straight down from her eyes, one down from her temples, and again beside her ear. They all reached down just under her jaw line.
I am just super curious. Lol.
