crocheting

posted 5th Jan
What's a good website and/or book to help me teach myself crochet? It's my project for the new year and I'm bound and determined to teach myself! (:

Youtube! Especially if you're a visual learner, like me. There are TONS of crocheting websites also. It's easy once you get the hang of it!

I've looked at a few on YouTube but I didn't know if there are some that are better than others. I'm hopefully getting my first crocheting needle and some yarn tomorrow. What size needle and of yarn would you recommend for a beginner?

I'd check out youtube. I learned from a book when I was a kid before there was youtube. But now you don't even have to spend money. Just go to youtube and watch videos or seriously just google how to crochet and Red Heart (Yarn company) has a website with how to get started.

F, G, or H to start with size wise. The hooks get larger as the letters go up. And all yarn is the same size, it's just the coarseness or softness that's different. And I would go with the typical Red Heart regular yarn (Sorry don't have it in front of me to look at) because the softer stuff slips on the needle more and it's hard to hold onto for beginners. I say try a light color so you can see your loops and stitches.

I say an I. I don't remember what number that is, but it should say I on it then a number, only because it's bigger and easier to work with but not too big.

I recommend learning with something like I love this yarn, and I believe it recommends a G or H hook.   Good Luck and welcome to addictive world of crochet! I have my own craft room dedicated to crochet, sewing and painting. LOL! It is ADDICTIVE. Just don't give up. If you feel frustrated step away until you are relaxed and try again. Some people get it right away and sometimes it takes a while to click. Just go at your own pace and enjoy.

I get into phases where I just crochet for hours on end for days and days and then I put it away again. But it's cold now and the blanket I've been working on for years is large enough for a lap piece, so I may break it out and watch a movie tonight. Lol.

So the bigger the letter the larger the hook? Gotcha. (:

I am the same. But I have a little business so I sometimes have moments where I have to crochet whether I am in the mood or not. LOL! I enjoy making new things, but it's the extended periods of sitting and having to stop in the middle of a stitch for someone.   My little girl comes first, then crochet, then the dog, then my husband. LOL! So mean, but he can take care of himself. But I too have been working on blankets. Making a pretty cotton afghan for my daughter's bed.   She likes the feeling of a blanket during the summer, but not the heat, so I am making on that can lay on just sheets, look pretty, give her the feeling she wants, but not too hot.

Sounds easy enough. I wanna make my daughter a blanket and also a blanket for my bed.

Fun! I'm the crazy chick who decided it was a GREAT idea to crochet entire adult sized blankets with a size F hook. And since I don't do it all the time, I've got two blankets that have seriously been in the works since 2003.
