posted 5th Jan
Well my breast are hard and hurt. They say that my little one has trouble sucking because she has a small mouth. I try to pump with a manual breast pump but no milk... what should I do??

How old is LO?

I had the same issue the first couple days home because I was so engorged. It might help to manually express some milk prior to feeding her until your nipple becomes soft enough that she can latch on.

Sometimes it helps to hand express in the shower. Check out KellyMom and Breastfeeding Inc. Between these two sites there are answers to every breastfeeding question you could think of.

Stop pumping. Do not use it to measure.
Put baby on the breast, keep baby there. Babies WILL fuss at the breast, this is normal.

You can express milk by hand, however this WILL cause you to lactate more and will only be a temporary fix for engorgement.

If your nipples hurt: before the latch, express some milk, rub it around on your nipple to lube it up. Squeeze your areola like a cheeseburger.. literally smash it flat, then shove as much as your breast into your baby's mouth as possible.

After baby is done nursing, express a little bit more milk into your nipples, rub it around and let them air dry. Coconut oil feels great on chapped nipples as well.

I couldnt breastfeed at first for the same reason and the thing that helped me most was a hot shower

I would use an electric breastpump for a couple minutes first, then put baby to breast once it was a bit softer. I also tried nipple shields, which helped quite a bit with a premature baby.
