Kids reading

posted 5th Jan
When did your kids learn to read?

Something seems to have clicked in Cora's head and now she is reading words. 2 weeks ago, she wasn't, not at all. And now she is attempting to read everything she can

she is sounding words out, asking me to help on occasion.

And it isn't just her memorizing her books. She is reading them in different places.

She is 4.5. What is the average time kids start learning to read basic words?

Heathen turned 4 in November, and really showed an interest just before her birthday.
She's very take-charge when it comes to story time, and she gets very upset if I try to help her.

My son started reading really well once he started kindergarten. He had no interest in it before. Now he's in 1st grade and can read most words if he takes the time.

The average age is probably 5. Most kids read completely between 4-6

All children are different. My daughter started reading when she was 3. There are lots of great websites with excercises and advice for parents. I bought a set of books specifically for learning to read but I'm in the UK and I didn't see where you were from so you might have something different. Just keep reading with her, her school should send some homework for reading with excercises about polyphonics but again it may be different.

Sienna is 3 and half, and she recognizes her name. That is about it.

Someone told me they want them reading BY kindergarten. My dad was a SAHD so I knew how to read by the time I was in kindergarten and I remember it was so smurfing boring learning to read again, and when I was in 3rd grade I could read at a grade 12+, I remember it sucked because I was still stuck reading 3rd grader books lol.

My little sister started reading in Kindergarten, and she is now a pro. She is in 2nd grade and is at the reading level of an 8th grader. She reads like a chapter book every couple days.

Nika started reading this time last year, I've got vids of her on Facebook, we're super proud as recently she's advanced even more

Usually I think at 4 they start recognizing words and putting together phonetics by 4.5/5

Wish Nika would colour and stay in line though >.>

I've seen the videos. TOO CUTE! And i love her "notes"

Cora doesn't color at all. She'll draw smiley faces and write letters but she won't color

Alex and Gabby could both 'read' their name and other stuff they saw all the time, by 3 or 4. Actal READING happened at 5 for both of them though. Jude still doesn't even really have much interest in it.
