Skin to Skin?
posted 5th Jan
So I am 27 weeks pregnant.
I want to do skin to skin with my baby girl and breast feed her.
I was wondering how that works. (not skin to skin or breast feeding) but when I give birth to her do they give me her and I do STS with her right after birth
OR do they clean her and me(the placenta) up then give me her to do STS?

I would ask about it. It varies. I know after I had my oldest, they wanted to give him to me right after he was born, but I was in and out of concineness [sp?]. My youngest, they wanted to check his vitals before giving him to me.

IME they will ask you before the dleivery and you can choose to:
1. have baby placed on your chest whilst the cord is attached ( circumstances allowing obv)
2. have cord cut then be handed baby
3. have cord cut and baby be rubbed down then handed over
Its all personal choice I would like to have the non cut cord and baby rubbed down a little with this one as with DD she had the cord tightly wrapped and it was a little while before i held her i think

Dd came right out and they put her on me for 3 hours before they even weighed her or anything just mommy me time.

depends on the birth.
My son had swallowed maconium (sp?) so I couldnt hold him right away. As soon as they cleaned him and checked him out we did skin to skin, then daddy did and then they kicked us out and moved us to a room lol

When I had my recent LO, they put her right on me and we did STS while the nurses dried her and I delivered the placenta. She didn't want to nurse at first, we tried almost right away.

It depends on the procedures at you hospital. Where I delivered all my kids and will this one is a free stand birth center . Right after birth we wait till the placenta I delivered then go to the bed ( water births ) then wait till the cord stops pulsing the entire time I get to hold the babies skin to skin. Then we cut the cord and after a few do a weight check then whe the baby is good and mad is when I usually try to nurse lol. MY midwife doesn't do much else for le five six hours later.

while i got stiched up/recovered from delivery and epi they let me hold her so i did skin to skin and breast fed her..my biggest mistake was not making sure she was latched well so she tore my nipples up which made bfing insane for the next 2 weeks!

I've had some push back at hospitals about STS. Basically, I wait until they leave, unwrap the baby and go at it. Some nurses will scoff or be pissy, but at that point, that baby is all mine and they can't say smurf.
