I'm not a mom yet but I have read multiple times that cereal is pointless.

Cereal is pointless, really. Just empty calories.

Solids really aren't necessary before a year and especially not recommended before six months. I started giving my son purees then.

it really is, but if you feel the need to give wait until 6 months, and never put it in a bottle.

Was it always pointless? I remember my mom fed us all rice cereal when we were younger....... oh how times have changed lol.

Yeah, pretty much. At least I think so.

Times have definitely changed, haha. My mother/grandmother would always say "I FED YOU SOLIDS AT TWO MONTHS AND YOU LIVED!"

it's really just empty calories that actually make a baby want to eat more, because it stretchs the stomach without providing much. Plus, it's stripped of most of it's nutrients and then "enriched" and "fortified" which actually makes it harder to absorb those nutrients.

My mom did lots of things that I would never think about doing with my children, lol
She always says well I raised the 4 of you....yup and now I am raising my own, my way.

Cereal is kinda pointless but I started it at 3 months(DS also has reflux so it helped) but he started baby food at 4 months.

Cereal is really pointless, and not good for babies.
Not only does it fill up baby with empty calories, but the enzyme needed to break down the grains in cereal, amylase, isn't even produced in babies until at least 6 months. Some studies are saying that there isn't enough produced to break down complex grains until after 1 year. Giving baby cereal before they can properly digest them can wreak havoc on baby's digestive system.

So skip the cereal, and don't start solids until at least 6 months. Even then, try to avoid grains until after 1 year.

Cereal is pointless. And solids before 6 months is not recommended.

What research did you base that decision on?

we skipped cereal and went straight to baby food at about 4 months when she would start opening her mouth to spoons and had good head control. we occasionally do cereal now but only because she has horrible reflux. it really isnt goof for baby, its a filler full of carbs and sugar. so they get less formula/ breastmilk and fill up on the bad stuff.

i based it on the fact that my daughter was hungary after eating an eight ounce bottle every two to three hours and after talking to my ped. she got half a tub of a fruit at noonish and half a tub of veggie at dinnertime. stage one. she is absolutley healthy at ten months and has no reactions to anything i have given her. everybody parents differently doesnt make it right or wrong
