re: 26 weeks and on. I need info

posted 5th Jan
My baby girl was born at 29 weeks and stayed in the NICU for 45 days. She came home a month before her due date. She was 2 pounds 8 ounces and 14 inches long at birth. She has been home since New Years Eve and is now 5 pounds and 18 inches long

Ok I might repeat stuff people said but it's too late to read all the responses!

A micro-preemie is usually used to define a baby born before 26 weeks but also refers to a baby born under 1 lb 12 oz.

DD was a micro-preemie due to weight but was born at 27weeks 4 days. She was growth restricted so she was the size of a 24 weeker or so. She was 1 lb 7oz, 12.5 inches. I will be honest in that girls tend to do better than boys because of their lung maturity, but if you reach 27 weeks with regular fluid amounts then that's a big plus.

Our Dr had told us that there are like jumps in differences of gestation and how much it can help. So like around 27 weeks-29 is about the same but making it to 30 was another big step, then like 32 I think, etc. I don't know how much of this is true, but it's what they told us.

DD did much better than most NICU babies her gestation. She didn't need much oxygen, no surgeries, no hypertension or anything. She stayed 64 days, but she aspirated on her formula and got pneumonia so had to stay 10 more days. Her main issues now are eating and physical delays mostly. She does have therapists but at 14 months adjusted/17 actual she just started truly walking today, she's bilingual, she's super social and really healthy for the most part.

If you want I posted my Youtube on my profile. I post videos of Delilah's milestones and have some NICU vids. I'm hoping to offer hope to moms in your position.

Thak you for sharing that with me
They measured him yesterday and he's approx. 1 lb 13 oz I would really like to get him to 2 lbs! I know their measurements can be off but that's even scarier that he could be smaller. I went 30 hours with absolutely no leaking and was starting to believe that my water had actually resealed, but I just woke up soaked
I guess I could still stay pregnant for a while longer with that leaking but I could also give birth any time now and it kills me to think he's struggling in there with no fluid.
They gave me steroid shots to mature his lungs which will be considered in full effect by tonight which is good. I want him safe but I want him safe INSIDE me not in the NICU for months

i'm sorry you're going through so much stress!
it's very scary, I'm sure
Sounds like you're being strong though

Sometimes, the bebe *is* better off in the NICU, where he can be monitored by doctors, and helped if needed
The NICU is a safe place

Stay strong

That's great you got the steroid shots. I got one 4 hours before the emergency c-section so I don't think it helped at all.

Like PP said, sometimes the it is safer for the baby to be outside. I hope you can keep him in for a while though. Good luck and stay strong!
