Thrush?

posted 5th Jan
I ended up in the hospital with Bronchitis and the breathing treatment they had me doing gave me thrush. While I was there they gave me some nasty liquid to slosh around in my mouth to help get rid of the thrush. Well I'm home now and it's the weekend, the inhaler I have to use is bringing it back. would anyone know what I could possibly do to make it not hurt so bad until I can call my doctor on Monday? I'm 8mo pregnant and not sure what I can take or can't take or if there is even anything I can grab from Wal-Mart or pharmacy store thingy to help just for the next couple of days. Brushing my teeth and tongue with toothpaste and mouth wash burns like a SOB! And has anyone ever heard of thrush affecting your teeth/gums? My teeth/gums feel weird and not sure how to explain it lol.

pick up some probiotic capsules at the grocery store and don't eat anything with sugar in it for it will make it worse and feed the infection.

antibiotics can cause thrush, i had it once as well its very painful yogurt works but i would eat plain yogurt, and the stuff they had you swish was niastatin its a antibiotic used to treat yeast infections and that is what thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth (gross i know) try not to eat spicy or acid foods as well that will irritate it good hun hope you get well soon

Probiotics are great & try swishing your mouth with vinegar. It may sting, but will kill the yeast & salt water is fine too.

Thanks ladies, unfortunately my Dr. has me on two different inhalers, amoxicyllin, and two other pills. I know the amoxacyllin will cause a UTI, but this is my first encounter with thrush and not sure if it could help it or make it worse. I'm desperate enough to try the vinegar at this point. :-P Thanks for letting me know what to avoid and what could help, y'all are awesome!

The amoxicillin is an antibiotic. They do NOT give antibiotics to treat thrush - they give antifungals. Probiotics work in treating thrush because they are what replaces the good bacteria that is lost with antibiotics. Yeast is candida - which is fungal. So, the body needs a balance between good bacteria & good yeast. It needs both. The problems arise when one or the other is overly killed off - so you end up with either a yeast infection OR a bacteria infection (vaginally it's either yeast or bacterial vaginosis, which you've likely heard of). Anyway - when you take an antibiotic, it should be STANDARD that you take a probiotic. Antibiotics target ALL the bacteria in your body. Not all bacteria is bad or not meant to be there. Therefore, when too much good ones are gone, yeast overtakes you & you end up pretty miserable. So the only way to prevent it is eating a TON of yogurt or buying capsules/tablets/powdered probiotics. You can also buy a yummy smoothie type drink called Kefir that is in the same section as yogurt & it is the skimming of the highly probiotic liquid off the top of the yogurt making process. That is my favorite way to handle it because I like smoothies. LOL And if you want to eat yogurt, just FYI that Greek/goat's milk yogurt has about 3x the probiotics in it that cow's milk yogurt has.

Oh it's times like this that I hate being lactose intolerant.   I will admit I have never heard of a probiotic, but I intend to find one first thing in the morning as long as a doctor does not have to prescribe one to me! Thank you for the information :-)

You don't need a prescription & every pharmacy should carry it as well as every health food store. The strongest ones are in the refrigerator - so if you go to a pharmacy they may be sold at the counter, but they do not ever require a prescription. But do ask if they carry the refrigerated type. It is by far the strongest.

It's ok. I'm not the best at wording things. I think some of the others thought the same thing.
