Newborn in a convertible seat?

posted 4th Jan
With my DS, he was to tall for his car seat by 9 months and was moved to a RF convertible. I see the convertible seats are rated 5lbs and up. It looks to me that if in an accident, these seats would be safer then an infant carseat (right???) The only down side I see is having to get a newborn in/out instead of bringing the whole carseat..But with my son I physically couldnt carry him in the seat after 3 months, he was just to heavy and awkward with the added 12 lb seat.

What is safest for newborn/infant?

Most convertibles are rated 5lbs and up but they do not fit newborns well.

When we have another I will use an infant seat until 2-3 months and move them to a convertible.

I did both and used an expired infant seat for hooking on to the stroller or in the back of a shopping cart. I preferred using the convertible seat for my newborn and it's what she came home from the hospital in.

I had dd in a convertible from birth... She's 3 months now and I went out and brought her a infant seat because she's on the smaller side, it's easier than the convertible, and fits her better

No seat is safer than the other. They are all tested to the same standards.
That being said, almost every convertible seat says it'll fit 5lbs and up, but that doesn't matter. If your child's shoulders aren't below the lowest harness slot, it is NOT safe.

Some of the best convertible seats for newborns are the Graco MyRide65, the Diono Radians, the First Years True fit, and the Combi Coccoro.

I would just use the infant for the first couple of months and then switch. By that time your LO would probably fit better by that time.

My youngest was too small for a convertible at first, but now they're making car seats for babies as small as 4 pounds, even convertibles. As long as it works for your baby and is installed safely you'll be fine. She was able to be in a convertible after only a few months. Just had to grow a little bit.

Soooo easy! And it's super comfy and supportive.

But she'll be too small in she comes preemie so I need to research cheap infant seats.

We used a convertible from birth with our second. I just used th Moby wrap when we went into stores. We had a Britax seat . It wasn't a big deal at all. If you do decide in an infant seat NEVER put the seat in the top part of a shopping cart. Car seats were made to go into there bases not carts . The seats may seem to click into the carts but they don't really . Use the bottom of the cart or a wrap or sling .
