re: Gay Child?

posted 6th Jan
My brother knew when he was 6/7. He didn't have the word for it until later, but he had an internal understanding that he was different and that he viewed boys and girls differently than other boys did, if that makes sense.

It's no different than "knowing" one is straight at that age. It's not a sexual thing, it's just a relational thing, and how you see the world and yourself in it.

People figure it out at different ages, and some never do, but it certainly IS possible to know and even be self-actualized about it at a younger age.

Well...

Something interesting happened today.

I was organizing my closet and came across yearbooks.

In fifth grade, I wrote things besides kid's name. One, was a forth grader. I don't remember him at all, but I wrote "gay" beside his name ((immature and mean of me, I know)).

Curious, I tried to look him up on facebook. He is VERY openly gay. I thought it was weird and just wanted to share. He had to be 9 or 10 at the time.

Lol, rude kid.
But I don't think it's weird at all. People have an innate sense about others, a "gaydar" if you will, kids or not. They're not ALWAYS right, but I think most of the time they are. It's a normal human instinct to determine who's a suitable partner for us, who's a threat to our relationships and who isn't. Even in a non-sexual, pre-pubescent sense.

Yeah, I was a little smurf in school. lol

But, very true. Didnt know I would have a "gaydar" at 11 though! Crazy!

I totally did. My brother and I had a tutor for computers skills when we were ages 8-12, who was in his late 30s. Both of us thought he was gay from day 1. Married 10+ years, had like 5 kids, uber-masculine guy, kind of a slob, so there was nothing "stereotypical" or obvious. We eventually sort of accepted that he was straight but the 'dar never stopped pinging.

Came out like 2 years ago, he's in his 50s now.
