quick question...broccoli

posted 4th Jan
I want to try a new recipe for a broccoli casserole tonight. It calls for frozen. I have half a bag of frozen and half a thing of fresh. How well would it cook together? Will it turn out funny? Should I let the frozen defrost a bit first or don't mix it at all?

I think it would depend on how the recipe calls to cook it. I substitute fresh for frozen all of the time, but I usually have to cook it differently.
Maybe try steaming the fresh broccoli first? I'm assuming you have to defrost the frozen in the microwave, and then it's usually steamed anyway.

A quick and easy way to steam fresh veggies is to just throw them in a microwaveable bowl, pour some water over them (just enough to cover the bottom of the bowl- like 0.5 inch), put saran wrap over top of the bowl and poke a couple holes with a knife, then microwave for 4-5 minutes.

Ya it calls for frozen. But I only have a bit of both. Lol I don't do casseroles ever no one here likes them. Lol but I'm going to anyways lol

Will it cook unevenly if I mix both?

I would thaw the frozen (like heat it up) and then steam the fresh.
Usually the frozen ones are steamed and then frozen, so just warming it up should be fine.

I ended up doing the frozen thawed and the fresh just the way it is. I altered the recipe a bit too. So hoping for the best. Lol it was a Campbell recipe so there's liquids in it. I doubled it kind of haha so it should be OK. If not oh well. No ones.going to eat more then likely anyway. Just me and lo.
