College.

posted 4th Jan
So it's been awhile since I've been on here but since then I've had my daughter and she is now 7 months old. With the New Year just beginning comes new challenges and changes. I'm thinking of going to college and doing it online. Is or has anyone else done online college? What are your experiences with it? Do you or did you like it? Also any other answers or comments to online college pertaining to the pros and cons are more then welcome.

What exactly are you going to school for? There are some courses that just shouldn't be taken online and it also depends on the person. Distant learning isn't for everyone. It takes a lot of discipline.

I'm thinking about going for criminal justice. I was home schooled all through high school and I loved it but I'm not quite sure how different college would be online from high school.

I have taken online courses and it is not easy. You have to have a lot of discipline to do it all on your own. DH had a very hard time with it, me not so much because I hate sitting in class listening to lectures.

I do my classes online. Im going for an accounting assistance degree through my local technical college. Its hard let me just tell you that. I currently work full time and go to school part time and have a 3yr running around the house. Online classes need alot of displine and quiet time to focus. But that isn't saying that it can't be done. You need to stay organized and make sure you are putting time aside each day for your studies. I know that to qualify for financial aid you have to be taking at least 6credits/semester and have at least a 2.0 GPA.

what program are you looking into taking?

I took classes at a local community college and some of the classes were online. But I never used a online only college.

In my experiences you have to be a self-learner to do online classes. If you are a hands on type learner online classes are not for you. If have to have structure, no one is going to remind you to do your assignments. It takes dedication to do online school work, and there isn't always a professor you can run to if you have a problem.

Personally I loved online classes such as history, fine arts, and business courses. But when it came to computers, biology and other course I preferred the in class approach .

My mom was 48 when she first enrolled in college and she loved it. I say everyone should give it a try at least once.

I was homeschooled as well but didn't have online classes in highschool.

Its doable but you need to make sure you are putting the time aside for it. Have you thought about blended classes. If you go through your local technical college they may have blended class as an option. Its where you do your school work online and meet inclass every so often

What I would suggest is find your local community college and see if they offer an associates in criminal justice. You can take your core classes online and go in for tests. That's exactly what I did when I was in nursing school. Courses like biology, math, english, psychology, etc I did online and went in for tests. For the science courses, I went in on scheduled Saturdays for 6 hour labs (which sucked). It worked for me. I was a full time student and full time leasing consultant. I didn't have time to go in for EVERY class, you know?

I took a mix of online and on site classes for my BA in psych. If you're going to go online do it through a local community college or a regionally accredited university that offer online as an option. Don't be stupid and do something like University of Pheonix which is a degree mill.

I am currently pursuing a master's degree in Counseling Psychology and I have discovered that I loathe and despise online classes. I don't get what I need from the courses. I do better when I can sit, listen, and discuss the topic at hand. Doing online is just missing something. Also, when you have a crappy teacher it is way harder to communicate with them, especially if they neglect to respond to emails. Online testing can also be trying if you are trying to take care of a child. All of our tests are online, even though most of my classes are face-to-face.

I also enjoy being able to get out of the house for a few hours on the nights I have class.

I've had the option to do online classes for a couple of mine but I refuse to do them. for a couple of reasons.
1- Lecture classes mean I will not be distracted. Online classes seem great because you think "Oh, well I can be home and take care of my kids while going to school!" but in reality, depending on the class, being distracted my kids while doing school is a HUGE issue. Even with lecture classes, I would go to campus on days I didn't have class so I could get work done without the distraction of children.

2- It was a social thing for me. I enjoy getting out of the house and socializing with people who talk about more than My Little Pony and Fresh Beat Band.

3- I work well alone but online learning is not a good way for me to learn and retain what I've learned. I prefer actual books over e-reading so that played a part too.

Yes.
My psychology exam was online. All of our tests could be taken twice so what I usually did was take it the first time on a whim and heavily distracted. When my kids went to bed, I'd pull out my book and retake it. On my final, I took my first exam and then my daughter set the second turn. I couldn't retake it. I scored about 20% lower than I would have if she hadn't started my second try.

We didn't get the luxury of taking the test twice. My son seems to wait until I've started my test, after I instructed him that he would have to entertain himself while I was taking it, to come and try to talk to me several times. I do like being able to choose when I take a test though.

The last test I took, I mistakenly waited until the last day to take it and then was in the middle of passing a significantly sized kidney stone. The professor clearly stated that no instance would excuse us from taking a test since we had five days to take it. I took it and made a C when I usually make an A. I got a mini lecture from my professor about waiting till the last minute to do things as well. Luckily, I still made an A in the class. Part of me wonders if he had mercy on me because my overall average was exactly 90.0. I think he may have calculated the absolute lowest grade I could make and still make an A. I feel like my grade grade should have been closer to a 50.
