It depends on the state. Housing inmates on death row cost more than "regular" housing for inmates. In California, its about 47k a year to house a lifer. Death penalty costs millions and the numbers are rising. One day, it will be billions of dollars for one death penalty case.

Hmmm. well im just thinking a normal inmate. One girl said it was like 37k a year. so what would 37k x 60 be? Do you think it would be more cost effective?

These figures are for California.

LWOP-approximately $44,563 a year
DP-$90,000 additional to that cost. A year. Not to mention the cost of appeals and such.

Typically death penalty people stay on death row for an average of 20 years. Due to their waits being extended by mandatory appeals. A figure I saw was for a 34 year sentence of LWOP for feeding, housing and keeping secure that inmate it would amount to approximately $1.598 million.

On the contrary for death row for 20 years it could cost a total of $2,742,040.

The breakdown for a LWOP is:
$19,663 security
$12,442 healthcare
7,214 prison operations such as maintenance and record keeping
$3,493 administration
$2,562 food, clothing and activities
$1,612 rehabilitation
$116 miscellaneous costs

It would be 2,220,000,000 which is less than the death penalty. You have to count the cost of housing these inmates on death row. I've heard of people being on death row for 10+ years. Then you have to take in account their appeals, court costs, etc. That's just after the sentencing. Once the trial is over and if they are found guilty, a lot of man power is put in to make sure that they are executing the right person. That costs a lot of money as well.

What happened to a fair and speedy trial. IMO, they should put a time limit for appeals and such. make it a max of 5 or so. Shouldnt take that long to retry an inmate for their appeal, IMO

I have no idea. Money aside, death penalty trials seem to prolong the victim's family's suffering. A lot of people think that someone is sentenced to death and they die a year or so later. It doesn't work that way.

True... and many victims' families may not live to see their justice served. I mean.. what's the point of 20 years sitting there?

Right? I understand wanting to make sure you're executing the right person but 20 years? It shouldn't take that long.

I definately believe in the death sentence. What's the point in keeping them alive in cell. Certain offenders cannot be rehabilitated and we have enough forensic science to solve criminal cases from over 50 years ago. However I read a book once about this football team that were lifers in prison. Some of them were in for murder but once you read the story you actually felt sorry for them. For eg one guy had found out that his sister had been brutally raped so went round and murdered the man that had done it. He didn't mean to kill him it was a fight that had turned bad. So for me it really depends on the crime. Definately sex crimes and child murderers but I think there would be a grey area.
It would make more room in prisons and would actually put people off the justice system is not a deterrant in this country it's laughable.
